British Oscar-winning classic could be getting surprise sequel
As a fan who has watched Slumdog Millionaire multiple times and even shed a tear or two during those emotional moments, I am absolutely thrilled to hear that there might be a sequel! The story of Jamal Malik resonated deeply with me, reminding me of my own humble beginnings and the power of determination in overcoming adversity.
It’s possible that Danny Boyle’s film “Slumdog Millionaire,” featuring Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, might unexpectedly have a follow-up.
The movie that received the prestigious Academy Award for Best Picture in 2009 is about Jamal Malik, previously a poverty-stricken child, who competes on an Indian adaptation of “Who Wants to Win a Million.
As Jamal goes through each question round, the producers persistently interrogate him, harboring doubts about his honesty. The narrative unfolds as he shares significant milestones from his past that influenced his responses to each query.
It appears that after more than 15 years since its initial release, there could potentially be a new installment in the works. According to Variety, a new production company named Bridge7 has negotiated a contract with Celador to acquire both movie and TV rights for this upcoming project.
Bridge7 co-founders Swati Shetty and Grant Kessman stated that some stories linger in our minds even after the ending, and “Slumdog Millionaire” is definitely one of them. The story’s message transcends cultural and geographical boundaries.
[It] captures the type of tales we adore, blending entertainment with deep, personal human stories. What sets [it] apart is not just its outstanding cinematic qualities – encompassing narrative, music, and an impressive list of awards – but also its ability to unite global talent into a triumphant ensemble.
Paul Smith, chairman of Celador International, expressed joy that Swati and Grant decided to debut their new company with the sequel to ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’ Celador International is eager to collaborate with Bridge7, as they embark on telling the continuation of Jamal’s captivating journey in the upcoming film.
Although Smith’s comment suggests that the sequel might follow Jamal’s tale further, there’s still uncertainty about whether Patel, fresh off his directorial premiere with “Monkey Man”, will take on the character again.
It remains undecided whether Boyle, having been awarded the Best Director honor at both the Oscars and BAFTAs, will be involved in the project again, either in the same role or otherwise. Moreover, apart from securing the top honors of Best Picture and Best Director, Slumdog Millionaire was also recognized with an additional six Academy Awards.
