Yerin Ha, known for Bridgerton, and Phia Saban, from House of the Dragon, will join Olivier Award nominee Lydia Wilson in a stage production of Jean Genet’s acclaimed 1947 play, The Maids. The production will be part of the 2025/2026 season at St. Ann’s Warehouse.
Kip Williams, who previously wrote the successful play The Picture of Dorian Gray featuring Sarah Snook, will also write this new show.
So, Williams is basically giving the show a total makeover for today’s world! It’s happening at a theater in Brooklyn from May 17th to June 14th, and I’m already checking ticket prices – sounds awesome!

Saban and Wilson will play the roles of maids, Solange and Claire, and Ha will star as their employer, Madame.
While their boss is gone, two housemaids give in to their secret, rebellious thoughts and imagine getting back at her. This employer, a popular online personality, has been cruel to them.

They spend the entire day intensely acting out different scenarios, sometimes even pretending to harm her, until it becomes hard to tell what’s pretend and what’s real.
Williams offers a modern story that feels particularly relevant today, exploring how we struggle with identity and the dangerous urge to both copy and destroy the people we admire.
After its first performance at the Donmar Warehouse in 2025, The Maids was highly praised by critics, with The Guardian calling it “exhilarating.”
Critics praised the show, with The Stage calling it a thrilling, modern experience and The Daily Mail highlighting its over-the-top spectacle and excellent execution.
I was really interested to hear that the show’s creator, Williams, was inspired by how much time we all spend on social media. He said our obsession with living online really shaped his new version of the story, which I think is a really cool idea!
He explained that the play explores how we all perform for others, trying to present a certain image of ourselves. It looks at the gap between the persona we create and our true selves, and how that performance can create a disconnect between what we imagine and what is real.
Honestly, seeing everyone’s ‘perfect’ lives online is getting to me. It feels like we’re all way too focused on stuff, looking young, and being beautiful, and it’s kinda messed up. You know, that writer Jean Genet? He wrote about this stuff way back in the mid-1900s, predicting how a society obsessed with possessions would fall apart, and… he was totally right. It’s a little scary, actually.
The Maids will be staged at St. Ann’s Warehouse from May 17 to June 14.
