Brand New Day Sets Up A Major Spider-Villain’s Introduction, And Nobody Noticed

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day revealed a lot: Mary Jane and Ned’s involvement, a possible appearance by Jean Grey (a powerful telepath from the X-Men), Mac Gargan becoming the Scorpion with a high-tech suit, and Peter Parker seemingly transforming into a new version of Spider-Man. However, some believe the trailer may not have shown everything truthfully, suggesting the story is even more mysterious than it appears.

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day prominently features the Hand, a group of ninja assassins, which is surprising given that other rumored villains haven’t been officially confirmed. While the movie might offer a good reason for including them in a story that already seems crowded, it’s possible that Mister Negative and the Inner Demons will ultimately be the main threats when the film comes out.

Is Spider-Man: Brand New Day Hiding Mister Negative?

It’s interesting to consider the Hand appearing in a Spider-Man movie, especially given the already crowded storyline of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, the Hand is already part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Punisher all operate on a street level – and with Punisher confirmed for Brand New Day – the rumors that Spider-Man will protect a jailed Daredevil from the Hand aren’t too far-fetched.

It looks like the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day might be using the same misleading trailer trick as Spider-Man: No Way Home. Specifically, it appears characters are being left out of a shot where Spider-Man fights ninjas in the air. However, instead of editing out characters, it would be a surprising twist if the enemies were changed to look like the Hand ninja clan, when they’re actually Inner Demons.

For years, fans have speculated about Mister Negative appearing in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. There’s been little to disprove the idea that Martin Li, who runs the F.E.A.S.T. shelter, will take on the role. Early theories even linked a red symbol seen on a tank Spider-Man chases to the Inner Demons. Actors Steven Yeun from Invincible and Stephen Oyoung from Marvel’s Spider-Man were previously considered as potential choices for the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Mister Negative And The Inner Demons Would Feel Right At Home

Switching characters dressed in black and white with those in red ninja suits would be a significant and potentially confusing change. However, a new series called The Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day, debuting on May 13th, aims to explore this idea.

This comic has a lot in common with the new Marvel movie, not just the title. The first four issues are set during the “Brand New Day” storyline, where everyone has forgotten Peter Parker is Spider-Man, and feature the Punisher. It’s likely no accident that Mister Negative is a villain here, possibly as a preview of his role in the movie coming out this July.

Beyond that, there are clear similarities between the Spider-Man: Brand New Day comic storyline and Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man game. For example, both feature a scene where Spider-Man chases Mister Negative in a fast-paced pursuit – they even share a specific move where Spider-Man uses his webs to quickly turn a vehicle. It remains to be seen, however, if the Marvel Cinematic Universe is subtly hinting at the “Inner Demons” storyline by presenting it as a conflict with the Hand.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.
