Boundary-pushing K-pop superstar Taemin is ‘grateful but still hungry’ to take the genre to greater heights

As a long-time fan of Taemin, it’s truly heartwarming to see him embark on his first world tour as a solo artist. His journey from debuting with SHINee to standing on stage at KCON is nothing short of inspiring. The way he has evolved as an artist, constantly pushing boundaries and exploring new creative avenues, is commendable.

Lately, it’s hard not to spot a K-pop artist on the Billboard charts, whether it’s the Hot 100, the 200, or any other popular music list.

Back in the day, the music genre wasn’t as developed as it is now. But when this fresh five-piece group named SHINee (pronounced “shiny”) burst onto the scene with their catchy debut hit “Replay,” they started illuminating countless hearts with their smooth R&B beats. Being aptly named “one who has light shone upon them,” SHINee paved the way for a new generation of teenage boys, influencing them to rock tight pants and high-tops, while their youthful appearances concealed their powerful vocals and confident stage demeanor.

They earned the title “K-pop Royalty,” paving the way and initiating a significant change in the K-pop industry, serving as trailblazers for other groups to emulate.

For over sixteen years since their initial formation, this band has managed to stay united – a remarkable achievement given the challenges and stresses that often plague the music industry. Each of its five members have ventured into individual careers, faced personal hardships, military obligations, and the pandemic, yet they show no signs of letting up.

It’s not surprising, then, for the Princes of K-pop to produce a “Prince Among Princes,” with the youngest member, Taemin, earning this title.

From an early age, Lee Taemin, famously known as Taemin, has shone brightly. Debuting with SHINee at only 14 years old, he was the youngest member in the group but took the lead when it came to launching a solo career. His 2014 album, “Ace,” reached the top of Korean music charts, marking his first successful step as a solo artist.

At 31 years old, I’ve consistently crafted my music with a unique perspective that blends gender-bending aesthetics, captivating vocals, thought-provoking lyrics filled with metaphors, and themes revolving around religion and sexuality. Yet, I’ve always managed to maintain a pop sensibility in all my work. As I’ve progressed, I’ve delved deeper into these themes, as evidenced on the early track “Soldier,” a stunning ballad from my debut solo studio album, “Press It.”

“Should I find a way to cleanse myself of my wrongs, I would immediately kneel down, enduring any pain or damage inflicted upon me. Swear it by the heavens above, I pledge, raising my hand, that all I desire is to become a warrior.”

Later songs such as “Advice,” released in 2020 prior to his military enlistment from the self-titled EP, exhibit a unique blend of catchy yet ominous and captivating tones. He is a gifted pianist who oversees the creative direction of his own albums, working with a diverse group of Korean and international artists on the production side.

As a film enthusiast, I find myself constantly inspired by the extraordinary dance talent of a particular artist. His skillful blend of styles, reminiscent of Bob Fosse’s dynamic choreography, Prince’s sensual grace, and Martha Graham’s emotional depth, leaves me in awe. This young dancer is my go-to source of inspiration for any new projects I undertake.

Given the increasing acceptance of non-English music among American audiences, Taemin is well-positioned to broaden his fanbase. He shares, “I debuted before the global attention on K-pop was as extensive as it is now. So, I’m truly grateful that I’ve been able to maintain my presence in the industry for long enough to reach this point.”

Following his shift from the large media conglomerate SM Entertainment to the comparatively smaller firm, Big Planet Made, fans are eagerly speculating about the potential risks he could be venturing into.

As a passionate moviegoer, last week was electrifying! The charismatic artist I admire announced his inaugural solo world tour, titled Ephemeral Gaze, and followed up with the exciting news that his fifth mini-album, “Eternal,” will be released on August 19. A captivating trailer hints at a gripping tale of duality shrouded in symbolism. In it, we see an ethereal, bridal-like figure of Taemin clad entirely in white, only to be replaced by a mysterious figure cloaked in black standing before the ominous cemetery gates. I can’t wait to unravel this enigma when the album drops!

Before he hit the KCON stage in July, we sat down with the pop icon.

In this conversation, I served as a translator, facilitating a Korean interview that was later translated by The Lippin Group and further refined by Oren Kozikaro. For added context, I also consulted with Christina Dirkes from Fandom during the process.

How does it feel to finally start your first world tour as a solo artist?

Embarking on a global solo tour is an incredibly significant journey for me, having been inspired by other renowned artists who’ve done the same since my debut. The experience is not only fulfilling but also serves as a testament to my fans’ support, which I strive to earn with every effort. With the launch of my latest album, the anticipation and desire for recognition has reached new heights; each release brings fresh excitement, but this time around, it feels particularly meaningful.

In a more conversational tone, here’s how you could ask that question: “What connection does the ominous art for your tour announcement have with the music on your forthcoming album? It seems to have a bit of a sci-fi vibe and resembles an eye or iris. Is there some deeper symbolism or theme we should be aware of?”

The idea that each person sees things from a unique perspective, including how they view artwork or myself, has been on my mind quite a bit. No matter the subject, everyone interprets it differently based on their individual experiences and perspectives. For instance, someone who’s followed my career closely may have a different impression of me compared to someone who just casually encounters me. Nevertheless, I remain the same person at heart, and that’s the philosophy guiding this tour, which we named “Ephemeral Gaze.”

Are there any books, stories, or pieces of art that have sparked your creativity for this album and tour? Have they influenced your work in some way?

It appears to me that I find inspiration in numerous locations. Instead of stating I derive inspiration from music, I can draw inspiration from films I watch, literature, and even daily experiences. Previously, I used to seek inspiration through creative pursuits. However, as of late, it seems I’ve been gaining a great deal of inspiration primarily from my own self.

Gazing at the surroundings during pleasant weather can spark inspiration, just as I’ve found myself drawn to the fascinating world of quantum physics recently. This knowledge serves as a catalyst for me when crafting imaginative tales.

Are you reading textbooks?

[Laughs.] YouTube.

Today, we’re at KCON 2024, and earlier some enthusiastic fans auditioned to perform on the “Dream Stage” for the dance number “Move.” When assembling a performance team, what characteristics do you prioritize in a background dancer?

When discussing professional dancers, it’s clear that each individual has already honed their skills and techniques. What truly sets us apart, in my opinion, is collaboration and teamwork within our group. This aspect deserves the greatest focus.

In the previous year, you graced the main stage at the Crypto.com Arena during KCON. This year, you’re back! I can’t help but wonder how it felt for you to return. Do you recall your first KCON performance with SHINee all the way back in 2016?

Regarding Los Angeles, I recall many things from my visit with SuperM, but my recollections from a potential trip with SHINee in 2016 are somewhat blurry. However, I do have a vague memory of an outdoor performance.

What are some of the ways you remain strong and protect your mental health under so much pressure?

As someone who appreciates the interconnectedness of mind and body, I make a point to incorporate regular exercise into my routine, understanding that it significantly contributes to my mental well-being. Furthermore, I find an extraordinary sense of motivation in my role as the loving caretaker of my two furry companions, Kkoong and Daeng. Being their father is more than just a title; it fuels me daily.

Since your debut, the K-pop scene has undergone significant growth and transformation. Is there any aspect of this industry that you feel could be improved for the better?

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the surge of adoration and attention K-pop is receiving lately. Being someone who’s always eager to grow, I see this moment as an exceptional chance to reveal more of my true self to a broader spectator base. The spotlight on K-pop presents me with a unique platform, and I can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity that comes with it.

You mentioned in an interview you can see growing the fan base and not just maintaining one?

Absolutely! I’m deeply appreciative of the immense affection I receive, and I must admit, there’s an unquenchable thirst within me for even more. It wouldn’t be truthful if I said otherwise. Consequently, I’m consistently striving to enhance and broaden my abilities, aiming to expand my fan base and garner even more love.

I’m really grateful, but I’m still hungry. (Laughs.)
