Bosch’s Prime Video Successor Just Added A TV Crime Legend To Its Cast

The Bosch universe on Prime Video continues to deliver, and the new series, Ballard, got off to a great start in the summer of 2025. Fans have even more to be excited about this year with the addition of a well-known TV crime drama star to the cast.

As a big fan of the Bosch universe, I’ve been really enjoying how Maggie Q has stepped into the lead role as Ballard now that Titus Welliver’s Harry Bosch is taking things a bit easier. And the news just keeps getting better! Not only will Welliver be back for season two alongside Q, but Benjamin Bratt is finally joining the franchise – I can’t wait to see what he brings to the table!

Jerry Bratt, famous for his role in Law & Order, will be joining season two of Ballard in a recurring role, bringing his experience playing a law enforcement officer to the show. Securing Bratt is a significant achievement for the Bosch franchise, as many TV fans consider his portrayal of Detective Rey Curtis to be iconic.

Curtis is best known for playing Detective Lennie Briscoe’s partner on Law & Order, where he often provided comic relief. He could have played a similar role alongside Harry Bosch, but his character in Ballard won’t be directly working with Bosch or Renée Ballard.

Benjamin Bratt Is A Crime TV Legend From Law & Order

Benjamin Bratt is a great fit for the Bosch series, but many consider his role on Law & Order to be his best. He joined the show in season six as Rey Curtis, a character who perfectly complemented Jerry Orbach’s veteran detective.

Curtis is a new, by-the-book detective, while Lenny Briscoe is an experienced, street-smart veteran who trusts his instincts. Their contrasting styles create one of the most enjoyable partnerships in the entire Law & Order series.

Year Rey Curtis TV appearances
1995–1996 Law & Order season 6
1996 Homicide: Life on the Street season 4
1996–1997 Law & Order season 7
1997–1998 Law & Order season 8
1997 Homicide: Life on the Street season 6
1998–1999 Law & Order season 9
1998 Exiled: A Law & Order Movie
1999 Homicide: Life on the Street season 7

One of the most rewarding parts of the show is watching Curtis grow from an opinionated and impulsive young officer into a reliable and dedicated core member of Briscoe’s team. Although he faces personal challenges along the way, he ultimately demonstrates that there’s a lot more to him than his initial, direct way of handling things.

When Jerry Bratt decided to leave Law & Order in 1999, he had become a popular character with fans. He later made a guest appearance in 2009 due to public demand. In the 1990s, Bratt also played Curtis on Law & Order’s spin-off, Homicide: Life on the Street, appearing in three episodes.

Who Benjamin Bratt Will Play In Ballard

Benjamin Bratt, who hasn’t played a detective since appearing on Law & Order 17 years ago, is returning to the role in the series Ballard. He’ll be joining Titus Welliver, who is back as Harry Bosch for the show’s second season. This time, though, Bratt won’t be playing a detective within a traditional police force.

According to Deadline, Joel McHale will play Ryan Ainsley, a former DEA agent. When the story begins in Ballard, Ainsley has left his dangerous job of stopping drug trafficking to live a quieter life as a rancher in Idaho.

Soon after, Renée Ballard seeks out Ainsley’s help, recognizing her unique skills are needed to crack a difficult cold case. While currently appearing in a recurring role, actor Scott Bratt could become a regular cast member starting with season 2, particularly if his character, Ryan Ainslie, proves as popular with viewers as Rey Curtis.

The series already boasts a strong cast, including Maggie Q, John Carroll Lynch, and the returning Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch. However, the addition of Benjamin Bratt will elevate Ballard and make it an even more compelling crime drama.
