As a huge music fan, I just heard some big news! BMG and Concord, the companies behind artists I love like Tina Turner and Jelly Roll, are joining forces. This means they’re going to be one of the four biggest music companies in the world – pretty exciting stuff for the industry and for listeners like me!
As a movie critic, I’m always fascinated by the players behind the scenes, and in the music world, BMG and Concord are making a serious power play. They’re clearly aiming to become the biggest independent force in the industry, positioning themselves right behind the giants – Universal, Warner, and Sony. It’s a bold move, and one that could really shake things up.
The details of the financial agreement weren’t revealed. However, Bloomberg reports the newly combined company, operating as BMG, is worth $14 billion.
The companies announced that the merger aims to help their artists and songwriters reach a larger international audience.
The newly formed BMG will handle all aspects of music – from songwriting and recording, to stage performances and online streaming. This means artists like Jason Aldean, Daddy Yankee, Korn, the musical ‘Hamilton’, Phil Collins, R.E.M., and the classic ‘The Sound of Music’ are now all working with the same company.

Bill Ackman’s investment firm, Pershing Square, has made a bid of over $65 billion to buy Universal Music Group, one of the biggest companies in the music industry. Universal Music Group represents popular artists like Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, and Bad Bunny.
According to the company’s new CEO, Bob Valentine, both organizations were created to champion artists and prioritize the needs of performers, songwriters, and playwrights. He stated that combining the companies will allow for increased investment in creative talent, all while maintaining the flexible and innovative environment that artists and songwriters appreciate.
This agreement makes BMG similar in size to Warner Records, which is the smallest of the three major record labels. By combining its strengths and focusing on independent artists, the company hopes to attract both new and established musicians.
The music industry is becoming increasingly competitive, with labels now trying to use AI and online trends to succeed. Companies are investing heavily in new technologies designed for music. Universal Music Group (UMG), for instance, recently partnered with AI leader Nvidia.

With the increasing amount of content created by artificial intelligence, Taylor Swift is now taking steps to legally protect her voice and likeness, joining other celebrities in doing so.
BMG, a music company headquartered in Berlin, was founded in 2008 by Bertelsmann, a major German media corporation. It currently holds the rights to more than 3 million songs and recordings.
Concord, a Nashville-based company with a massive music library of over 1.3 million recordings, works with more than 125,000 artists. The newly formed company will be headquartered in Nashville, and will also have a major European office in Berlin.
Over the past few years, BMG and Concord have been actively buying up music catalogs. Since 2021, BMG has spent more than $1.5 billion on acquiring music rights, and an additional similar amount on signing new artists and licensing deals. Concord has also been a major investor, spending over $3 billion since 2020 on music publishing, recordings, and distribution.
According to Serona Elton, who leads the Music Industry Program at the University of Miami, combining these music collections has the potential to be very successful.
Although the newly combined company doesn’t have a large overall market share, limiting its broad influence, its valuable music catalog gives it significant leverage in negotiations, according to Elton’s statement.
