Blizzard unveils ‘Overwatch Rush’: A top-down Hero Shooter built for Mobile

Okay, so Blizzard just announced a new Overwatch game called Overwatch Rush, and it’s a big deal! It’s their first real push into mobile gaming with the Overwatch universe. Forget what you know about playing in first-person – this one’s totally different. It’s a top-down shooter designed specifically for phones and tablets, and they’re starting tests now. I’m really excited to see how this plays!

Four years ago, we first mentioned the possibility of an Overwatch mobile game. We then shared an update on its development in October 2024, and last April, we reported on publishing agreements for the game in certain regions.

As someone who’s spent a lot of time – over 1000 hours combined – playing games like Overwatch, Paladins, and Marvel Rivals, the recent announcement makes me wonder: can Blizzard create a fresh take on Overwatch while still keeping what makes it special? We’ll just have to wait and see.

This is not a port, but a standalone version

Overwatch Rush differs from games like League of Legends: Wild Rift by offering a completely new way to play. While Wild Rift tries to recreate the PC version’s gameplay on mobile, Overwatch Rush is its own game with a bird’s-eye view. This change from the typical first-person shooter perspective helps Blizzard avoid the messy and complicated interfaces often found in mobile FPS games.

Instead of simply bringing the PC and console game to mobile, Blizzard is building a version specifically designed for mobile devices. I believe this is a smart approach to appeal to mobile gamers.

As a huge Overwatch fan, I’m really glad to hear that a dedicated mobile team is working on the new project! It’s awesome knowing that Team 4, the folks who make the main game so great, can keep focusing on PC and console updates without being pulled in different directions. This means both versions should get the attention they deserve, and they won’t be fighting for the same development resources – that’s a big relief!

How to play Overwatch Rush and when it will release

Even though Overwatch Rush is newly launched, Blizzard is already starting tests with players in different regions. To help with this, they’ve created an official Discord server so developers can easily connect with and get feedback from the community during these initial stages.

The team announced they plan to keep growing the world of Overwatch with new and exciting experiences for players on all gaming systems.

We don’t have a release date yet, as development is still in its early stages. We’re hoping to have a clearer timeline later this year, and currently anticipate a release in 2027, though that could be delayed, similar to what happened with Wild Rift.
