Blade Runner 2099 has unveiled a first look.
The world of Blade Runner began with Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Over time, it has grown into a sci-fi series including two films, an anime show, comics, and video games—all set in a dark, futuristic world where human-like bioengineered beings called “replicants” are pursued. Now, the story is being revisited with a new miniseries featuring a talented cast.
As a huge fan of the original Blade Runner, I was really excited to see the first images from the upcoming Blade Runner 2099 in Entertainment Weekly! It looks amazing. Apparently, Michelle Yeoh is going to be playing Olwen, a Blade Runner who’s actually a replicant herself – and she’s on a mission to track down some runaway replicants while also facing the end of her life. Hunter Schafer is playing Cora, Olwen’s partner, which is a really cool twist because Cora is actually human, but she’s spent her whole life running from Blade Runners, and now she’s pretending to be one of them! I can’t wait to see how this all plays out.
Blade Runner is a hugely influential sci-fi series. According to showrunner Silka Luisa, the original film’s director, Ridley Scott, was vital to the new series because it draws heavily from his established vision. She explains they needed his approval and understanding of his initial ideas regarding both the story and visual style – core elements that remain important to the Blade Runner mythology.
The highly anticipated new Blade Runner series will finally premiere on Prime Video after five years of development, though a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet. According to Luisa, the team took their time to honor the original film’s legacy and ensure the show met expectations. “Everyone involved was a huge fan and understood the importance of getting it right,” she explained, which is why the process has been so lengthy.
Luisa explains that the events of Blade Runner 2099 take place after a war between 2049 and 2099, which humanity lost. The show depicts a world where humans are treated as second-class citizens, exploring a future where human life is no longer valued or needed.
At the time of writing, Blade Runner 2099 does not have an official release date for Prime Video.
