After winning the Game of the Year award in 2021 with It Takes Two, Hazelight Studios has released another potential contender for the Split Fiction. Released on March 6, Split Fiction is already one of the highest-rated games of the year, despite facing stiff competition from titles like Monster Hunter Wilds and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. With its impressive gameplay, it’s shaping up to be a strong contender for Game of the Year.

Hazelight Studios is renowned for developing cherished cooperative games, but their latest creation, “Split Fiction,” marks a significant leap forward in gaming. This game has ended a 13-year drought for Electronic Arts (EA) by securing a Metacritic score of over 90. In fact, it’s the first EA published game to achieve this since “Mass Effect 3” in 2012. Currently, “Split Fiction” boasts an impressive 91 on Metacritic and a 98% positive rating on Steam. We’re absolutely thrilled about this!

Man, let me tell ya! Not only did Split Fiction nail it with critical acclaim, but it’s been an absolute smash hit commercially too. In just two days since its release, it flew off the digital shelves like hotcakes, moving over a million copies – something It Takes Two didn’t manage until nearly a month in! On Steam, it even broke records with a whopping 259,000 concurrent players at once, completely dwarfing It Takes Two’s previous high of 71,000. Now that’s what I call a successful launch!

It’s important to note that other games may not have achieved the same level of success. When Monster Hunter Wilds was unveiled at The Game Awards 2023, anticipation reached new heights. And it’s fair to say that Monster Hunter Wilds has exceeded expectations. In just 3 days, Capcom’s latest addition to the cherished franchise sold 8 million copies, making it the fastest-selling game in Capcom’s history.

In contrast to Split Fiction, it has received mixed reviews on Steam with 62% positive feedback. The victory of Astro Bot as Game of the Year last year demonstrates that gamers prefer fun titles that function smoothly upon initial release.

But how exactly has Hazelight done it again?

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at the triumph of Split Fiction. What sets it apart is the unwavering dedication of Hazelight to accessibility. Their innovative Friends Pass allows two gamers to delve into the game simultaneously with only one copy purchased, making it an effortless leap into cooperative play. Initially, this might seem counterintuitive for sales growth. However, as Swen Vincke from Larian Studios aptly put at The Game Awards 2024, it’s not just about the figures; it’s about creating a community and making gaming experiences more inclusive.

Despite the early stage in the year, Split Fiction is showing great promise as a potential Game of the Year. However, it’s important to remain cautious as heavyweights like Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) and others such as Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2 are also on the horizon. In other words, there’s a lot more exciting content in store for us.

Despite various gaming trends, it’s truly invigorating to witness Split Fiction‘s dedication towards cooperative gaming.
