Ben Stiller excited for Severance season 2, hopes to get season 3 out "sooner"

As a gamer who’s been through countless twists and turns in virtual worlds, I can confidently say that the anticipation for Season 2 of Severance is akin to waiting for the final boss to appear after hours of grinding levels. It’s been a long journey since April 2022, but the release date on January 17, 2025, brings hope that our favorite inmates and outies will finally reveal their secrets.

Severance is a captivating, amusing, spine-chilling science fiction series on Apple TV+ that follows a team of employees who opt to undergo a process where their work selves have no recollection of their activities outside the office, and vice versa. However, complications arise when these work selves develop unique identities and begin to harbor resentment towards their “outside” selves – their “Outies,” as referred to in the show – for placing them in such a situation. The first season of Severance, which concluded in April 2022, presented several thought-provoking queries. Indeed, we’ve been eagerly anticipating the arrival of season 2 for more than two years now!

Great news! The long wait for the next season of “Severance” will soon be over as it premieres on Apple TV+ on January 17, 2025. With just a few months left before its arrival, the team behind the show, led by director and executive producer Ben Stiller, is well aware of the high expectations. As he told Variety, “It’s taken a long time. I hope it’s good.” He further added, “People are eager for something that matches their previous experience and doesn’t disappoint. So all we can do is strive to create what we believe is good.

I’m excited for it. We put it put everything into it. And it’s been fun to explore the story and work with these actors and [series creator] Dan Erickson. I’ve never had that experience of being with something for so long, where the characters really start to have a life and the actors understand the characters so well, and it grows into something more.

Stiller seems hopeful about the upcoming season, yet it feels quite absurd to have to wait three years for a second season of a TV show. He acknowledged this frustration himself: “It’s been challenging and intriguing over the past few years to create content, on all fronts,” he said. “So, while we strive to produce the best possible season, I recognize that it’s taken some time. Like many others, I too get irritated when things take a long time. I can empathize with the anticipation and desire for the next season to come sooner.

Stiller doesn’t disclose the specific cause of the delay, but it’s said that the production encountered troubles behind the scenes, such as financial difficulties and disputes among producers Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman. However, if the end result is impressive, any grievances will be forgotten.

Previously, our group of “innies” had planned to revive their awareness while outside their world, but this awakening is temporary. In the opening scene of season 2, Mark (Adam Scott) is seen carrying a bunch of blue balloons down a hallway at his enigmatic workplace. The significance? At the moment, it remains a mystery. I’m eager to uncover the secrets behind their plot!

John Turturro, who portrays Mark’s inner-circle friend Irving, expressed his excitement about the upcoming second season, stating, ‘It promises to be an intriguing continuation. We’re exploring uncharted territories that viewers have been eagerly anticipating, but at a gradual pace.’

I only watched the first season of Severance recently and I’m glad I waited, cause I wouldn’t have wanted to experience the cliffhanger at the end of season 1 and then have to wait three years for the follow-up. Viva January!
