As a devoted fan who had the privilege of witnessing the enchanting journey of New Zealand’s experimental music maestro, Dean Roberts, I feel deeply saddened by his untimely departure at 49. Having been captivated by his unique sonic tapestries for over two decades, it is a profound loss that leaves an indelible void in the musical landscape.
Beloved New Zealand experimental musician Dean Roberts died on Wednesday at age 49.
There hasn’t been any official statement about the reason for his demise, but it was mentioned that his passing was sudden, and he did not appear to be ill.
Hailing from Auckland in 1975, Roberts built a strong reputation for being one of New Zealand’s most industrious performers over the span of more than three decades. He was associated with numerous bands and independent projects during his illustrious career.
Roberts dabbled in a range of genres, including electro, acoustic and improvisation.
In 1992, he kicked off his musical journey as part of the well-known rock group Thela, staying with them till 1996.
After demonstrating his skills as a performer, he went on to create a one-man venture named White Winged Moth, where he performed eccentric electroacoustic pieces using both the piano and guitar.
Over the course of his career, the seasoned musician performed not only in New Zealand but also worldwide, gracing stages in the U.S. and Italy, even stadiums in America and Italy.
Dean’s distinctive approach attracted numerous renowned musicians globally, such as Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth, who teamed up with him in 1999 for a collaboration.
In a heartfelt post on social media, Kranky Records, once associated with Roberts, conveyed the heartbreaking update using an album cover and poignant message: ‘Rest eternally.’
Heartbroken fans quickly took to X to pay tribute to the beloved performer.
One fan expressed, “I’ll greatly mourn your absence. The way you transformed the world into a melody, and discovered the unheard tones within the instrument you mastered.”
Rips Dean is one of my most cherished musicians, and he truly serves as an inspiration to me in every way.
‘His work left a lasting mark on me. Lonely and atmospheric and enveloping all at once,’ a third person chipped in.
Roberts is survived by his sister.
