Behind the scenes of The Bachelor franchise’s worst meltdown yet… and the dark truth producers are now openly admitting

Taylor Frankie Paul was living every single girl’s dream.

Just before her season of The Bachelorette began, she was everywhere – featured in a magazine cover story, looking radiant on the Oscars red carpet, and surrounded by many eager suitors.

Before the show started, the model told Us Magazine she needed a fresh start and wanted to escape the negativity she was experiencing in Utah, focusing on self-discovery.

Paul, who gained attention for a controversial relationship revealed on the Hulu series The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, surprisingly described herself as a ‘very soft, gentle person.’

I show a more unfiltered, sometimes messy, side of myself on my podcast, ‘Secret Lives,’ so people often have a preconceived notion of what I’m like. It surprises them when they meet me because I’m actually a pretty laid-back and easygoing person.

Just three days before her first performance of the season, fans saw a more vulnerable side of Paul when a highly public and painful breakup shattered her hopes for romance.

A leaked video appears to show Paul physically attacking Dakota Mortenson, who is the father of one of her children and was her partner when the video was taken.

This isn’t the first time the show has faced controversy (we’ll get to past issues later), but according to Michael Carroll, a reality TV producer with experience on both The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, this scandal is far bigger than anything the show has ever seen before.

He told the Daily Mail that casting Taylor was a major mistake, particularly given her troubled history.

The lead character is presented as the most desirable person in the country, yet she has a complex history – three children with different fathers, a criminal record, and a past involving casual relationships. This raises questions about the choices being made in portraying this character and the message it sends to viewers.

After a video became widely circulated online just three days before it was set to premiere, ABC cancelled the upcoming season of The Bachelorette. Disney Entertainment Television released a statement saying they made the decision to halt the season and are now focused on supporting the affected family.

Disney’s last-minute choice is believed to have cost the company tens of millions of dollars, and many are questioning why Paul was cast in the first place. Executives working on The Bachelor knew about Paul’s past domestic violence charge when they made the decision.

Let me be clear: nobody involved had any idea this upsetting and frankly disturbing footage was going to surface. It really came as a shock to everyone.

The video shows Paul kicking and putting Mortenson in a headlock, then throwing metal chairs at him. Paul’s five-year-old daughter started to cry, and Mortenson later claimed that one of the chairs accidentally hit her.

Carroll thinks ABC cast Paul hoping to attract his large social media following – around seven million people – and turn viewers of his show, Mormon Wives, into fans of The Bachelorette. They were taking a risk to boost the show’s declining ratings.

Carroll explained that the decision to make a significant change was understandable, as the show’s viewership and prestige had declined somewhat. Plus, having Hulu, ABC, and Disney all under one corporate umbrella created a natural opportunity for collaboration.

I’m not sure this was the best choice for the role, particularly given this actor’s complicated past. It’s surprising, considering they likely did a thorough background check and were aware of everything.

The cancellation happened after a growing and controversial scandal. It all started when Paul, who was already well-known from reality TV, was chosen as the next Bachelorette.

Paul is making history as the first lead on The Bachelorette who hasn’t been on the show before, which surprised a lot of viewers. Many fans, known as ‘Bachelor Nation,’ were worried about the network’s choice because of Paul’s past legal issues.

Paul, a mother of three, became well-known for the drama on the reality show The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. During a difficult divorce and a new, complicated relationship, she revealed that her friends were exploring ‘soft swinging’ – a casual approach to intimacy within their relationships.

That wasn’t the end of her difficulties. In 2023, she was arrested following an argument with Mortenson and charged with several crimes, including aggravated assault, domestic violence, and child abuse. She admitted guilt to one charge of aggravated assault and remains on probation. Currently, there are two separate investigations into alleged domestic violence incidents involving her and Mortenson.

As someone who’s watched the evolution of reality TV, let me tell you, The Bachelor has changed a lot! It started as this seemingly wholesome dating show over 20 years ago, promising modern fairy tales. But it’s definitely come a long way from those early, innocent days.

The show, and its variations like ‘The Bachelorette,’ built its popularity on a simple idea: if people are genuinely looking for love, they’ll find it – just like the classic ‘boy meets girl’ story, but with more dates and a final choice. The premise relies on the belief that true connections will lead to lasting happiness.

When the show first aired in 2002, it was the best of its kind – a standout dating competition that quickly became a reality TV favorite. It captured viewers with its genuine and hopeful portrayal of romance, and the first season’s finale drew an impressive 18 million viewers.

More recently, shows like The Bachelor and The Bachelorette have seen a drop in viewers. This is likely due to increased competition from other dating shows and shifts in what people want to watch on reality TV, leading to longer gaps between seasons.

According to Carroll, the Bachelor franchise is facing a critical turning point after the controversy surrounding Paul.

According to Carroll, producers of The Bachelor are struggling to adapt to the current landscape of dating shows. Unlike shows like Love Is Blind and Temptation Island, which focus on drama and physical attraction, The Bachelor has traditionally presented a more genuine and romantic portrayal of finding love. The trend now favors scandalous and sensational content, which doesn’t align with The Bachelor‘s established brand.

Over the past ten years, many other controversies have damaged the reputation of The Bachelor franchise. It’s faced increasing criticism for how thoroughly it investigates potential contestants and for a lack of diversity both on screen and behind the scenes.

The Bachelor franchise received significant backlash for not having its first Black lead, Rachel Lindsay, until 2017—a full 15 years after the show began. They also faced criticism for including a contestant on Lindsay’s season who had previously posted racist and anti-immigrant comments online.

In recent seasons of The Bachelor and related shows, several contestants have faced criticism for various issues. These include making offensive jokes, inappropriately adopting elements of other cultures, and dishonesty about their relationship status. Some have even been removed from the show due to excessive drinking or accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior.

As a longtime fan, I was absolutely shocked and disturbed to learn just how serious things got after Colton’s season. It was heartbreaking to hear that Cassie Randolph actually had to seek legal protection from him. She filed for a restraining order because she claimed he was stalking her – putting a tracker on her car, hanging around her family’s house, and sending really frightening texts. The worst part? She said he even pretended to be a mysterious stalker in one message, months after their breakup. It was a really dark turn for the show, and honestly, it made me see things very differently.

Randolph initially obtained temporary restraining orders against Underwood, but they were withdrawn after the two reached a private settlement in November 2020. Underwood publicly stated their support for Randolph’s choice to drop the orders.

Underwood stated that Cassie requested the court to drop the temporary restraining order against him. They’ve reached a private understanding that resolves Cassie’s concerns. Underwood believes Cassie was justified in seeking the restraining orders and acted honestly. He asks for continued respect for their privacy.

Recent issues led to significant changes behind the scenes of The Bachelor. Chris Harrison, the show’s longtime host, left in 2021 after publicly supporting a contestant who had faced racism accusations. Then, in 2023, the show’s creator, Mike Fleiss, also departed following a Warner Bros. TV investigation into claims of racial discrimination. Neither ABC, Warner Bros. TV, nor Fleiss initially commented on the investigation or the reasons for Fleiss’s exit, but Fleiss later acknowledged the show’s struggles with diversity.

He expressed pride in the progress made on diversity during his five years with the show, but acknowledged he could have done more. He’s hopeful the show will continue to become more inclusive in the future.

In 2025, Claire Freeland and Bennett Graebner, the showrunners who took over from Mike Fleiss, also left The Bachelor franchise. Their departure followed accusations of a negative and unfriendly work environment. Both Freeland and Graebner disputed these claims, releasing a statement through their legal counsel.

My clients are experienced and highly regarded professionals in this industry. They’re shocked and upset to be learning certain things only now.

At the same time, the show’s viewership has dropped dramatically due to the recent scandals. It’s now struggling to reach three million viewers, which is a significant decrease from 2003 when the premiere attracted over 17 million people.

As Carroll pointed out, while past issues caused Paul’s show to end, the drama surrounding her could surprisingly be exactly what the struggling Bachelor franchise needs to regain popularity.

He found the whole situation with Taylor’s cancelled season of The Bachelorette both strange and amusing, noting the ironic effect of bringing renewed attention to The Bachelor. ‘It’s funny how this has everyone talking about The Bachelor again,’ he said, laughing. ‘Honestly, it’s the most buzz the show has gotten in years, and they could really benefit from it if they play their cards right.’

This year, however, there’s no happy ending in sight for the longtime franchise — at least not yet.

According to Carroll, the newest scandal involving The Bachelor franchise will undoubtedly cause further changes and internal conflict, including blame and a lack of trust in how the show is managed.

With fans speculating about the show’s future, Carroll believes this situation could trigger significant changes within the network, potentially altering the direction of the entire series.

He speculated that the show might see some behind-the-scenes changes, possibly with the return of previous executive producers. He also suggested that ABC is likely discussing whether to continue the series, considering the significant financial losses – potentially $75 to $100 million – that cancelling a popular show for a full season would entail. These losses aren’t just from lost advertising revenue during the 12 weeks the show would have aired, but also from broken contracts with associated businesses like hotels, resorts, and airlines. Ultimately, cancelling the show would be a very costly decision.
