The BBC has released a trailer for its upcoming drama, Mint. Described as a unique crime story with a central romance and emotional struggles, the show is set to premiere on April 20th.
Emma Laird, known for her role in Mayor of Kingstown, and musician Loyle Carner (Ben Coyle-Larner) play the main characters, Shannon and Arran. Shannon comes from a family already involved in crime, while Arran is the returning son of another criminal family newly arrived in town. A preview clip showed an immediate and powerful connection between them when they first meet.
The latest trailer reveals more about the growing connection between the main characters and introduces several members of the rival families. It also showcases the unique and artistic visual style of the film.

In the teaser, Arran explains that love is about putting another person first. He says, “That person is all that you can see.”
“You’re all that I can see,” Shannon says in return.
The Guardian recently interviewed the stars and creator of Mint, and described the show as both captivating and intriguing. They also noted its strong similarities to the well-known story of Romeo and Juliet.

So, they filmed this whole thing in and around Glasgow, which is awesome! And the cast is seriously good – you might recognize Sam Riley from Control, Laura Fraser from Breaking Bad and Patience, Lewis Gribben from Somewhere Boy and Black Mirror, Connor Newall who was in 28 Years Later, and the amazing Lindsay Duncan from Sherwood. I’m really excited to see them all in action!

The show will also explore a strong connection between Arran and Shannon, a bond that will positively impact both of their lives, even if others don’t understand or approve.
As Shannon and Arran fall in love despite the obstacles, Shannon’s family begins to fall apart, starting with her father’s unexpected and unexplained decision to resign from his leadership position.
I was so excited to hear Emma Laird, who plays Shannon, talk about Mint! She said it reminded her of how she felt when she first discovered Twilight – like the very first romance she really connected with. It’s such a sweet comparison and makes me even more eager to watch!
She described the show Mint as potentially having the same impact on her that Twilight did during her youth – a captivating, romantic, and innocent experience with a grand, cinematic feel. She emphasized that Mint is about more than just its plot or characters; it’s a much larger world altogether, she told The Guardian.

Charlotte Regan, the creator of Mint, shared that she’s consistently inspired by working-class people and enjoys portraying them in unexpected and fresh settings.
In an interview with Deadline, Regan explained that he loves gangster movies, but realized he lacked the budget and experience to create a big action-packed shootout. So, he decided to make a romance instead.
I’m a big fan of both action-packed gangster movies and heartwarming romantic comedies, so I’m aiming to combine those elements. I also want to add a touch of magical realism – it’s about blending all my favorite things into one story.
All episodes of Mint will be available on BBC iPlayer starting Monday, April 20th. The series will also premiere on BBC One the same night at 9pm.
