BBC reveals first-look at new 1930s-set Agatha Christie with Mimi Keene

As a dedicated fan of Agatha Christie adaptations, the announcement of Towards Zero leaves me utterly thrilled! With my vast collection of her novels and my unrivaled ability to solve mysteries before the final reveal (I mean, who else can spot a murderer from a mile away?), I can’t wait to see how this intricate web of deceit unfolds on screen.

The BBC unveiled a sneak peek of the upcoming Agatha Christie remake titled “Towards Zero“, featuring actress Mimi Keene from “Sex Education“.

As I excitedly await its release, confirmed way back in June, I find myself immersed in a captivating narrative set in the 1930s. The story revolves around me and an ex-spouse, Neville and Audrey, who opt for an unconventional summer reunion at our childhood home and the estate of Neville’s aunt, Lady Tressilian.

Nonetheless, the atmosphere grows tense, particularly with the arrival of Neville’s new spouse, Kay (Keene). Add to this mix a variety of other characters, and a homicide occurs.

Initial images have appeared, displaying Keene portrayed as she engages intimately with Neville (played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen) on a sandy shore.

Also shown are Oscar-winner Anjelica Huston as Lady Tressilian in bed, as well as Ella Lily Hyland as Kay and Matthew Rhys’s Inspector Leach, who must “untangle a toxic web of jealousy, deceit and dysfunction” before a potential further murder.

In “Toward Zero,” we’ll see performances from actors like Jackie Clune, Grace Doherty, Jack Farthing, Khalil Gharbia, Adam Hugill, Clarke Peters, and Anjana Vasan. Some of these talented individuals can even be seen in the promotional images for the film.

According to writer Rachel Bennette, these characters of Christie’s are not only wealthy and intricate but also incredibly compelling, and it was the charm, especially of her female characters, that had me hooked from the start.

Bringing these characters to life in this gripping narrative of reality and deception, affection and animosity has been exhilarating. Set against the dramatic elegance of the 1930s, the story seems eerily contemporary.

Sam Yates, the director, remarked: “It was a privilege to breathe life into one of Agatha Christie’s most psychologically deep and sensually charged tales, working alongside a talented ensemble of performers and an exceptional crew.

Viewers can expect an exhilarating, captivating journey deep into the mysterious depths of some of Agatha Christie’s most alluring personalities.

The television series “Towards Zero” is set to be aired on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom, as well as on BritBox in both the United States and Canada, starting from the year 2025.
