BBC Radio Cumbria presenter Richard Nankivell dies age 75 after a short illness

Richard Nankivell, a presenter for BBC Radio Cumbria, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 75 following a brief illness.

The broadcaster joined the station in 1992 and remained until his retirement in 2015.

Radio Cumbria announced some sad news on their Facebook page, along with a touching tribute.

I’m absolutely heartbroken. They just announced that Richard Nankivell, you know, the voice of Cumbria on BBC Radio, has passed away. He was 75, and it was so sudden – a short illness, they said. I honestly can’t believe it. He was a legend, truly. I listened to him every single day, and it just won’t be the same without him. It really, really won’t.

‘He will be remembered fondly by listeners across Cumbria and beyond.’

Richard, originally from North Devon, began his career as a livestock auctioneer. He then transitioned to broadcasting, starting with The British Forces Broadcasting Service in 1972.

For twenty years, he created and presented programs while working in various international locations, including Cyprus, Gibraltar, Germany, Belize, the Falkland Islands, and the Gulf, before returning to the UK.

Chris Rick, the executive editor at Radio Cumbria, told the BBC that Richard’s shows were so popular in Cumbria because he was funny and really understood how to make great radio.

Richard, known to everyone as Nanks, was a popular and funny coworker, just as engaging off the air as he was on the radio.

The BBC Cumbria team still remembered him with affection, even though he’d been retired for more than ten years, sharing stories about his memorable and vibrant personality.

He is survived by his wife Heather Wainwright, who is Radio Cumbria’s breakfast newsreader.

Fans shared their sadness and cherished memories of Richards on BBC Radio Cumbria’s Facebook page, with one commenting, ‘He was a true legend, and I always enjoyed listening to his show while working the night shift.’

Nanks was a truly gifted radio personality – creative, unique, and a joy to listen to. Beyond his talent, he was a kind and wonderful person. We’ll always cherish the many happy memories he gave us. Thank you, Nanks.

‘Such a distinctive voice on the Cumbrian airwaves, funny, clever fella, Rest in peace Nanks.’
