Okay, so I just heard some awesome news! Doctor Foster is coming back for one last season! Remember that show? It totally had me hooked a few years ago, back in 2015-2017. The BBC confirmed it, and Suranne Jones is returning as Gemma, which is amazing. Bertie Carvel is back as Simon too, and Tom Taylor will be playing their son, Tom. It’s going to be five episodes, and it’s the final season, so I’m both excited and a little sad!
The latest season, again written by creator Mike Bartlett, begins with a recap: ten years prior, Gemma Foster expertly retaliated after learning of her husband Simon’s infidelity. However, the consequences were severe – her teenage son, Tom, vanished.
In the third series, Gemma continues working as a doctor and living in her familiar home, but she’s excited about a new chapter in her life – she’s getting married! However, as the wedding approaches and loved ones gather, old secrets start to surface, potentially ruining her happiness and damaging her good name.
What to Read Next
Gemma is determined to defend her loved ones and uncover who is trying to harm them. But can she overcome her past, get revenge, and build the life she wants before time runs out?
Suranne Jones, known for her roles in Netflix’s Hostage and the ITV thriller Frauds (with Jodie Whittaker), said she immediately agreed to reprise her role as Gemma Foster when she was asked. She felt the timing was perfect.

We wanted to jump ahead in time after the first two seasons, and it was important to bring back Tom – Gemma and Simon’s son who ran away – as a grown-up, wanting answers about his past.
Jones explained that she sees this next story as being focused on “holding people responsible and asking tough questions.” She also noted that the characters Gemma and Simon have a lot of issues to work through.
She also expressed her enthusiasm about collaborating with Mike Bartlett and the team at Drama Republic on the scripts, and shared that she’s eager to begin filming.
Drama Republic’s Roanna Benn and Jude Liknaitzky praised Bartlett’s writing as exciting and captivating, calling it bold and daring. They expressed their enthusiasm for seeing Suranne Jones and Bertie Carvel act together again, and for the introduction of the adult version of the character Tom, predicting the series will be fantastic.

Lindsay Salt, who heads up drama at the BBC, expressed her excitement about bringing Doctor Foster back to the network after nearly ten years.
Everyone loved the first two seasons, thanks to Mike’s great writing, the amazing team at Drama Republic, and our fantastic actors. We’re thrilled to be back for one last, incredible season! Let’s do this!
The BBC announced the show’s return and described Doctor Foster as a huge hit in the UK when it originally aired, pointing out that almost 10 million viewers tuned in for the last episode of series two.
The show received excellent reviews and won the National Television Award for Best New Drama in 2016. Suranne Jones also received critical acclaim, winning Best Actress awards at both the National Television Awards and the BAFTAs for her portrayal of Gemma Foster.
Filming for Doctor Foster‘s third series is due to start in the spring.
Doctor Foster will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
