Baywatch fans slam reboot in brutal takedown as they tear into cast for ‘no acting ability’

Baywatch was hugely popular worldwide in the 1990s, but the new version isn’t getting a good reaction from many fans, who think it might fail.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m excited to share that Fox is bringing back a beloved classic! They just announced plans to completely revamp the series with a new season of 12 episodes, scheduled to air in 2026-2027. It’s a fresh take on a familiar favorite, and I think audiences are going to love it!

I’m so excited about the new Baywatch! It centers around Hobie, Mitch Buchannon’s son, who’s now taking on the role of captain – it’s amazing to see him following in his dad’s footsteps. The show features a whole new team of lifeguards working alongside him, protecting the beaches of Los Angeles. It really feels like a fresh take on a classic!

The announcement of the cast caused a surprise, as social media influencers like Livvy Dunne and Brooks Nader were chosen for the lifeguard roles, despite being more famous for their Instagram presence than their acting experience.

The cast also includes Stephen Amell, Shay Mitchell, and Noah Beck, plus David Chokachi, an original star from Baywatch, who is reprising his role as Cody Madison.

When initial photos and video clips were released online on Wednesday, fans immediately reacted negatively, criticizing the reboot as unoriginal, questioning the casting of influencers, and predicting the story wouldn’t be successful.

A lot of people still seemed bothered by how poorly the 2017 Baywatch movie, with Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, had performed.

Viewers reacted negatively to the new Baywatch reboot, with one critic questioning the decision to make it, and another predicting it would fail, criticizing Hollywood for a lack of originality.

One even predicted, ‘Watch it be cancelled after one season. Ain’t nobody watching this.’

Another added, ‘Humanity has regressed since the ’90s.’

The cast’s influencer-heavy lineup didn’t go unnoticed either.

One person commented that the script must be terrible if they had to rely so heavily on influencers for casting. Another user pointed out that it seems like Hollywood is no longer prioritizing hiring professional actors.

One user questioned, ‘It’s gonna flop— you have a gymnast with no tested acting abilities?’

And the lack of diversity didn’t escape criticism either.

‘Not one Black woman on the whole cast. CHOP!!’ wrote one disgruntled fan.

Despite the vocal backlash, the cast seems to be embracing the opportunity.

Nader shared a selfie on Tuesday, showing her wearing the iconic swimsuit and expressing her enthusiasm for the show’s revival.

She shared a photo with the caption, ‘So excited to show everyone what we’ve been up to! #Baywatch2026.’

Nader will take on the role of Selene, a sharp-tongued captain of the Zuma Beach lifeguards.

Dunne, the gymnast-turned-influencer, was also spotted on set.

She’ll portray Grace, an eager and enthusiastic lifeguard, marking her acting debut.

Okay, so I’ve been following Maisie Dunne forever on TikTok and Instagram, and she’s finally, finally making her acting debut! Honestly, it’s a bit crazy to see her move into acting, and the fandom is totally split – some people are super excited and supportive, while others are… well, let’s just say they’re skeptical. I’m trying to stay positive, though! I just know she’ll be amazing!

The story centers around Hobie Buchannon, portrayed by Amell, who is now leading the Baywatch team. His life is complicated when his daughter, Charlie, shows up wanting to become a lifeguard just like him.

It’s amazing to see David Chokachi back as Cody Madison! He now owns and runs ‘The Shoreline,’ which is basically the Baywatch hangout spot, and he even still gets to do the occasional rescue in his iconic red shorts. It’s like no time has passed at all, and as a longtime fan, it’s just fantastic!

Mitchell joins the cast as Trina, a woman who used to be a successful lawyer but now works as a lifeguard after leaving her former career.

Harrison will portray Nat, a former foster kid turned Olympic athlete.

The new Baywatch series follows Hobie as his life changes when Charlie arrives, determined to follow in her family’s footsteps and become a lifeguard with her dad. Meanwhile, Cody Madison, a former Baywatch star, now owns The Shoreline, a popular beachside bar and grill, and occasionally still jumps in to help with rescues.

Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network, told Variety that the original Baywatch was hugely popular and made lifeguards famous. He announced that the show is being revived with Fremantle, promising a new version for today’s audiences.

Fox and Fremantle are teaming up with the creators of the original series to revive Baywatch for a new audience. The updated show will feature new stories, exciting new actors, and all the action and drama that made Baywatch famous around the world.
