Basketball star who made history by becoming the first openly gay player in the NBL reveals the extreme way he tried to change his sexuality
As a fellow human being who values authenticity and personal growth, I am truly inspired by Isaac Humphries’ courageous journey. His decision to openly embrace who he is, not just as a basketball player but as a person, is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit.
Last year, Isaac Humphries openly declared his sexuality as gay, with the aim of creating a path for other athletes in professional sports to follow suit.
As a devoted follower of Melbourne United’s basketball team, I can share a deeply personal story about one of its players. This individual embarked on a lengthy, internal odyssey to embrace his true identity, sometimes pushing himself to the limits in an attempt to alter his sexuality.
In a recent episode of the “Mental As Anyone” podcast, the 26-year-old shares his experience trying out hypnotherapy.
As a lifestyle guide, I can relate to the internal struggle many closeted individuals experience. I’ve felt the self-loathing, the fear, and the embarrassment that often accompanies hiding one’s true sexual orientation.
‘You just go down this big spiral. Sure, in the grand scheme of things isn’t a massive deal in this day and age at all, but the residual effects that was having on my life was very much the reason why I was falling in such a dark space.’
In desperation, Isaac asked a hypnotherapist to alter his thoughts.
He shared that he visited a hypnotherapist and expressed his desire for help, saying, “Could you attempt to hypnotize me in order to alter my perspective on males and potentially restructure my thought patterns towards women instead, so I wouldn’t have to confront this issue?” was his request.
Isaac continued: ‘I was like, “I want a wife and kids and a house and family.”
To begin with, they guided me into focusing exclusively on that topic and blocking out everything else, even negative thoughts. I found myself thinking, “Wow, this is extraordinary,” but I was compelled to comply because the notion of being gay was completely unbearable to me. Needless to say, it proved ineffective.
Humphries made history as the inaugural openly gay player in the NBL, and just the second player worldwide in a top-level league, by announcing this fact to his teammates.
He is the second active athlete in one of Australia’s top sports leagues to come out as gay, joining A-League Men player Josh Cavallo.
Last year, Humphries expressed his viewpoint that it’s undoubtedly the right moment for us to initiate a transformation. He wants to demonstrate to future generations that they have the freedom to become whatever they aspire to be, while always remaining true to their authentic selves.
As someone who has navigated my own journey as a professional athlete and openly gay individual, I wholeheartedly believe that one can excel in sports while being true to oneself. My personal experiences have shown me that it is not only possible but essential to embrace all aspects of our identities, including our sexual orientation, in order to find success both on and off the field. We are more than just our athletic abilities; we are complex individuals with unique stories and perspectives. Let us continue to break down barriers and inspire future generations by showing that you can be a professional athlete, live authentically, and be proud of who you are – gay or otherwise.
As a devoted follower, I’d like to share that our central player openly confided in his teammates about experiencing profoundly challenging periods in his life. He shared how he concealed his true identity, his sexuality, not just from others but also himself – a secret that led him to moments of deep despair and contemplating the unthinkable.
‘It is a truth about myself that I have wanted to deny for a long time, but now I feel comfortable in telling you all. That truth, is that I am gay,’ Humphries said.
During my travels, I’ve faced some incredibly tough periods, yet these challenges have spurred significant personal development within me. Now, I find contentment in embracing my true self.
During the latest break from play, I’ve discovered quite a bit about my own self, and it’s been a topic that’s occupied my thoughts extensively.
If I decide to join a team and begin a new season, I understand that I’ll need to be open about my identity and stop hiding it anymore.
He signed with Melbourne United last July.
In the video, he emphasized that as sportspeople, given our profession, it’s essential for us to act as role models to others.
In reality, countless individuals in various realms face daily hardships, unaware of how to rise or merely survive.
‘I know how that feels and I want to represent those people.
My intention here is to convey the message that anyone, regardless of identity or occupation, has the potential to achieve whatever they desire.
I simply aim to be true to who I am. I’ve found that expressing myself authentically seems to be my life’s mission, so I plan to put my heart into it.
Humphries, a professional basketball player, becomes the second man to publicly identify as gay while competing in one of the world’s elite basketball leagues.
NBA veteran Jason Collins was the first, in 2013.
Prior to his upcoming encounter with his previous team, the Adelaide 36ers, scheduled for John Cain Arena on this coming Thursday evening, Humphries made his declaration.
United CEO Nick Truelson and head coach Dean Vickerman said the organisation is proud of Humphries.
Today marks a remarkable milestone on Isaac’s path, and our team stands fully behind him, stated Truelson.
‘Not only as a member of our club, but as a person.
‘This is a momentous occasion for him personally, but also for male sport on a global scale.’
A multitude of athletes, spectators, teams, and the NBA itself applauded Humphries for making a significant stride, with many expressing their approval.
As an over-the-moon fan, I can’t help but express my heartfelt pride and gratitude towards Isaac for generously opening up about his journey, as stated in a tweet from the NBA’s official handle.
‘It’s clear that Isaac’s bravery and truthfulness will make a profound difference for numerous people. Our admiration and backing for him are steadfast.’
The Brisbane Lions AFL team replied, ‘Boosting spirits and offering support through storytelling, buddy!’, while the Adelaide United A-League team said, ‘We’re proud of you, Isaac Humphries7.’
Among Australian basketball teams, the Adelaide 36ers and Tasmania JackJumpers were among those who praised Humphries for making a significant leap in his career within the sport.
NBA coach Dave Love, just like Perth Wildcats owner Craig Hutchison, was an avid news follower. They both expressed their thoughts on a tweet by Isaac Humphries: ‘Your courage, power, and inspiration are immense. Thank you for sharing your journey. The entire @NBL community stands with you.’ In simpler terms, they admired Isaac Humphries’ bravery and were moved by his story, showing support for him within the NBA league.
