Bad Bunny is the latest, but not the first, Latino artist to win album of the year

Bad Bunny’s album, “Debí Tirar Más Fotos,” achieved a historic milestone on Sunday, becoming the first album primarily in Spanish to win Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. This win marked a significant moment for Latin music at the 68th annual ceremony.

This victory makes the Puerto Rican artist the third Latino performer to receive the ceremony’s top prize, following Santana, fronted by guitarist Carlos Santana, and Brazilian musician João Gilberto.

Santana won a Grammy Award in 2000 for their 1999 album, “Supernatural.” The album featured several popular songs, including “Smooth” with Rob Thomas from Matchbox Twenty, “Maria Maria” with the group Product G&B, and “Corazón Espinado,” which included a collaboration with Maná.

Awards

I was absolutely thrilled when Bad Bunny’s ‘Débi Tirar Más Fotos’ won Album of the Year at the Grammys! It’s such a huge moment – it’s the very first time an album sung entirely in Spanish has ever taken home that award. It feels amazing to see him make history!

The celebrated guitarist, now 78, made history as the first Hispanic artist to win a Grammy for Album of the Year. His album, “Supernatural,” is still one of the best-selling albums ever, having sold over 30 million copies.

In 1965, Stan Getz, an American saxophonist, and Brazilian guitarist Gilberto won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Their winning album, “Getz/Gilberto,” became famous for its songs “Desafinado” and “The Girl from Ipanema,” which helped define a musical genre.

Gilberto’s award was historic for a couple of reasons: he was the first Latino artist to receive it, and his album was the first jazz recording to win in its category. His success also played a big role in making bossa nova, the popular music style of his home country, known around the world.

Though Antônio Carlos Jobim significantly contributed to the music on the album “Getz/Gilberto,” he wasn’t included among the Grammy winners. Similarly, Astrud Gilberto, famous for singing on “The Girl from Ipanema,” didn’t win for Album of the Year. However, she did win a Grammy that same night for Record of the Year for her performance on the song, becoming the first Latina to ever receive that award.

Music

I was so thrilled to see Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, and Billie Eilish all make history at the Grammys on Sunday! Their wins felt like a real turning point, and it was amazing to witness.

Bad Bunny largely spoke in Spanish when accepting his Album of the Year award on Sunday night, and used his speech to show support for Latino and immigrant communities.

He dedicated the award to everyone who has left their home country in pursuit of their dreams, speaking in English.

Speaking in Spanish, the artist expressed his pride in Puerto Rico, saying it’s far more than just its physical size and that the island is capable of anything. He then offered thanks to God, the academy, and everyone who has supported him throughout his career, as well as the team who worked on the album. He finished by thanking his mother for bringing him into the world in Puerto Rico, declaring his love for her.
