Avowed Took Six Years To Make; Underwent Two Reboots
Summary
- Avowed faced development struggles, experiencing two reboots before finding success under new leadership.
- The game focused on story and lore, transitioning from open world to “open zones” inspired by The Outer Worlds.
- Despite delays, Avowed received positive reviews and proved that changing course during development can lead to success.
Recently launched action RPG titled “Avowed,” developed by Obsidian Entertainment, generated plenty of positive chatter upon its release this month. Its creation process was rather stormy during development.
Back at the Xbox Games Showcase in July 2020, the release of this game was unveiled, but it wasn’t until February 18, five years later, that it finally hit the shelves. However, what you may not know is that the development of this game faced multiple hurdles, requiring a reboot on no less than two occasions.
Avowed’s Development Began In 2018

Carrie Patel, the game director, revealed some challenges faced during the creation of Avowed, as detailed in a conversation with Bloomberg (requires subscription). Initially, when Avowed was unveiled, the game had already undergone two vertical slices (a section designed to showcase the gameplay experience). Despite this, the progress wasn’t meeting the expectations of the development team. By January, the studio decided to change the leadership team for the project and restarted the game from scratch.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “Usually, when I’m reassessing the creative path of a game project, gathering a fresh vertical slice and revising production plans, I do so with just a handful of folks. However, in my case, at that point, we weren’t a tiny team.
Over the next few weeks and months, it fell upon Patel to create a fresh perspective for the game, appoint crucial team leaders, and ensure the continued engagement of the existing developers.
Under Patel’s leadership, Avowed underwent significant transformations, such as deepening the narrative and mythology from their Pillars of Eternity series, with the game’s setting being the world of Avowed. Instead of an expansive open world, they opted for “open zones” akin to Obisidian’s 2019 RPG success The Outer Worlds. This shift in approach enabled the development team to construct intricate, compact areas while sacrificing the complete open-world experience.
Patel elaborated, “When it comes to any game, we ponder, ‘Which mountains should we climb? The ones that truly matter for us.’ From our experience with The Outer Worlds, we realized we could create a fantastic game by incorporating ‘open zones.’ This approach not only allows us to craft areas more uniquely and purposefully, but also offers a feeling of progression as the player moves from one setting to another.
After Patel assumed control, the revamped version of Avowed was unveiled in 2023. Originally scheduled for a fall 2024 launch, it was subsequently postponed to February 2025.
It appears that whatever Patel and the development team have accomplished with the RPG, it has been successful. Upon our evaluation, we awarded it an impressive 9/10 rating, praising it as “not what I expected, but I loved every moment.” We found ourselves eager to replay it again, and its relatively short duration made this more feasible. Avowed demonstrates that larger isn’t always superior. Rather than striving to outdo every other game on the market in size, Obsidian remained committed to their vision and delivered a well-crafted experience that I became deeply attached to.
In addition to our own observations, the game Avowed is also highly praised elsewhere. On Open Critic, it boasts an impressive 85% recommendation score from critics and currently holds a “Strong” rating.
Frequently, projects that are restarted several times struggle to succeed. However, Avowed demonstrates that occasionally, altering the direction in the midst of development can lead to success.
