Avowed Frame Rate Will Be At a ‘Bare Minimum’ of 30fps For ‘A Lot Juicier’ Visual Effects
As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt and a soft spot for immersive RPGs, I find myself intrigued by Obsidian Entertainment’s decision to prioritize visual quality over frame rate in their upcoming title, Avowed.
In a strategic move aimed at delivering the most visually appealing experience, Obsidian Entertainment has affirmed that their upcoming first-person fantasy RPG, Avowed, will strive for a minimum frame rate of 30fps, focusing on achieving the richest visuals possible.
Matt Hansen, the Art Director, stated during an interview on the Iron Lords podcast (via IGN), “We aim for a minimum of 30fps. This is our expectation.” He added that since it’s a first-person, single-player game, a frame rate of 60 isn’t always necessary. This extra headroom enables us to create more vibrant visual effects, superior lighting, and other enhancements.
According to Hansen, this was a decision the studio made at the beginning of development, which they describe as a “trade-off.” However, Obsidian expresses satisfaction with this choice. Moreover, he noted that the game runs smoothly given its visually rich content, and this smooth performance has always been their objective.
It is confirmed that Avowed will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC on 18th February 2025, and given that Starfield has just received a 60fps performance update for Xbox Series S (after an identical update for Xbox Series X in May), it’s possible that Obsidian’s game may also get a frame rate improvement in the future.
