Avowed clocks in at largest download size of all Obsidian titles, but small to the industry—fans aren’t worried
With each passing day, anticipation and excitement for the upcoming game Avowed builds, fueled by tidbits of information that trickle out. Now, pre-loading for the Xbox Game Pass for PC version has begun, requiring approximately 75 GB of storage space.
Does size matter?
Knowledgeable fans aren’t fretting about the relatively small file size of ‘Avowed’, as they understand that quality isn’t always proportional to size. Similarly, Obsidian Entertainment’s enthusiastic fanbase has faith that a fantastic game like ‘Pentiment’ can take up just 12 GB on their hard drive.
Some enthusiasts also highlight an issue related to ever-growing game file sizes, which restricts the number of games one can simultaneously store due to space constraints. As new patches and downloadable content are released, these files will continue to expand, making it advantageous for budget-conscious gamers to start with smaller storage options.
As a gamer, I’ve got to clarify something about the upcoming game, Avowed. Contrary to what some might think, it’s not an open-world title, which accounts for its relatively smaller size. Even though it has a larger file size compared to other games from the same studio, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s packed with less content or ambition. In terms of industry standards, a bigger file size doesn’t automatically equate to a lower quality game. The games you mentioned, all roughly the same size as Avowed, offer a diverse range of quality, so we can’t assume that smaller means less promising for Avowed.
As a passionate gamer myself, I’m all too familiar with the concept of embracing the “quirks” when a highly-anticipated game finally drops. It’s understood that Obsidian, like many other developers of epic fantasy RPGs (ahem, Elder Scrolls series), might launch a game with some initial issues. But rest assured, we trust in their ability to deliver an engaging gaming experience despite any minor hiccups at the start.
