Warner Bros. announced the release date for Dune: Part Three on Tuesday, creating a major battle for box office success this year. It’s set to premiere on December 18th – the same day as another highly anticipated film. Usually, big-budget movies like these avoid opening on the same day, so it’s unusual that these two are competing head-to-head.
The release of Barbie and Oppenheimer was a unique success story. Warner Bros. and Universal thought the two movies would attract different audiences, so they wouldn’t compete with each other – and that strategy worked. However, the situation with Dune: Part Two is different. Both it and the new superhero movie will likely appeal to the same viewers, raising the question of why one of them isn’t being released on a different date.
Why Avengers: Doomsday vs. Dune: Part Three Isn’t “Barbenheimer”
As we’ve discussed, Barbie and Oppenheimer were made for different viewers. Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday, though very different in style, are both large-scale, visually impressive films that serve as the exciting finales to long-running stories told across many movies and TV shows. Avengers: Doomsday is likely to appeal to a broader audience and has a more established history in film, despite initially being dismissed by some online.
As a movie critic, I’m watching this release date standoff with fascination. Usually, when two big films are aiming for the same audience, one will shift to avoid a box office battle – it just makes financial sense to let both thrive. But that’s not happening with Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday. Both studios are digging in their heels and refusing to move from their December 18th release dates, which means we’re in for a serious showdown at the multiplex!
Why Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three Won’t Move
Disney and Warner Bros. are determined to release Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three on December 18th, hoping to encourage dedicated fans to see the movies in theaters multiple times. They believe a December release, during the holidays when people have more leisure time, will maximize ticket sales and potentially exceed the box office performance of previous films in these franchises.
With summer approaching, Marvel is planning to release Avengers: Doomsday in December instead of July. This is a first for an Avengers film, and it might reflect the fact that Marvel’s audience is now older – December was traditionally when Star Wars movies came out, appealing to an older demographic. While summer offers kids a break from school, adult fans need vacation time to fully enjoy a long movie experience.
The Real “Dunesday” Loser May Be Jumanji 3
The release of Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday on December 11th could negatively impact other films in theaters. Because cinemas are likely to prioritize showing these two blockbusters, there may be limited screen time available for movies like Jumanji. Industry sources report that exhibitors are concerned Jumanji won’t get enough showings and could suffer as a result.
If a movie release date changes, it might be Sony shifting the release of Jumanji. However, studios often release less prominent films in the weeks following Thanksgiving and before winter break, as those weeks usually have little competition.
Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three open in theaters on December 18.
