Avatar 4 & 5 Get Stunning Update From Producer

Good news for fans of the Avatar franchise! Updates on the upcoming fourth and fifth movies suggest a bright future for the series. The third film, Fire and Ash, was released last December to mostly positive reviews, though some critics noted similarities to the earlier films. Despite this, it was a massive success, earning $1.4 billion worldwide and winning awards, including an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Rae Sanchini hints work on Avatar 4 and even Part 5 could start ‘soon’

Production on Avatar 4 and 5 might start shortly, as a lot of advance work is needed, says producer Rae Sanchini.

In an interview with ScreenRant about the digital release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, producer Sanchini explained that planning for future sequels requires a significant amount of advance preparation. She indicated that work on those sequels needs to begin shortly.

I was chatting with James Cameron at the Saturn Awards earlier this month, and he let slip that while nothing is definitely happening with more Avatar movies just yet, it’s highly probable we’ll see them. What’s really interesting is that he and the team aren’t just going to repeat themselves. He’s promising to really learn from what worked – and didn’t – in the first three films, and he’s paying attention to what audiences are telling them. It sounds like they’re aiming to make the next installments even better, informed by everything that came before.

The director explained he’d like to give Oona Chaplin’s character, Varang, a bigger role in upcoming movies, similar to how Payakan became more prominent. He said the enthusiastic fan response to Payakan in The Way of Water led to his inclusion in the next film.

The next Avatar movie, currently scheduled for release on December 21, 2029, is already partially filmed. Director James Cameron revealed in 2023 that he shot scenes for the fourth film because the story jumps forward in time with the younger characters. He explained that they filmed scenes showing the characters, then fast-forwarded six years in the story, and plan to film the scenes set after that time jump once the third movie is released.

The fifth Avatar movie is currently planned for release on December 19, 2031. According to late producer Jon Landau, who spoke with Gizmodo in 2022, the film will feature Zoe Saldana’s character, Neytiri, traveling to Earth – Jake Sully’s original home.
