The 2018 monster movie The Meg takes inspiration from Steve Alten’s 1997 novel of the same name and brings back the thrill – and fear – of sharks in the ocean. Directed by Jon Turteltaub (known for Last Vegas), the film updates the classic shark-attack formula established by Jaws, featuring an even bigger and scarier predator. It reflects what modern audiences want to see in a monster movie, and after becoming available on HBO Max, it’s gaining renewed attention and sparking hopes for more films in the series.

A key question surrounding the upcoming Spider-Man movie focuses on how it will portray The Punisher. This popular Marvel Comics character, known for his use of firearms and vigilante justice, first appeared in 1974 and has a dedicated fanbase. As with any well-loved character, fans are very protective and quick to share their opinions if they feel a new adaptation doesn’t capture the essence of The Punisher.

It didn’t take long for other streaming services, with larger financial resources and innovative ideas, to try and replicate the success of this show. Only three years after the first season of True Detective, Netflix released Mindhunter, which quickly set a new standard for crime dramas.

Like all new technologies, AI comes with risks. The atomic bomb, for example, was devastating, but arguably contributed to a longer stretch of peace. So even something very negative can have unexpected benefits. Whether those benefits outweigh the risks is a difficult question, and I don’t have an answer.
