Christopher Nolan shared that a heartwarming reason inspired him to create his film adaptation of The Odyssey – his dog, Charlie! The movie, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, retells Homer’s classic story about the king of Ithaca’s long journey home to his family after the Trojan War.
The filmmaker recently told BBC Radio 1 that getting a dog deepened the emotional impact of the ending to his film, Odyssey.
Odysseus, after a long journey, returns to his home in Ithaca disguised as a beggar. There, he meets Argos, his faithful old hunting dog, who has been patiently waiting for his return. Argos peacefully dies soon after, creating a particularly powerful moment for the reader.
The filmmaker, a new dog owner with no prior experience growing up with dogs, explained that they hadn’t gotten a dog for their children when they were young, even though the kids had always asked. They finally got one after the children had all gone to college, which the kids were still a little upset about.

When asked about how his chocolate Labrador inspired the film—originally called Charlie’s Tale—Nolan revealed that Argos’s death in The Odyssey deeply affected him and was a key motivation for making the movie.
He explained that a particular scene involving Argos was so funny it made him realize he absolutely had to create the movie. He said, “That moment really sealed the deal for me.”
During a BBC Radio 1 interview, host Ali Plumb pointed out that actor Damon Albarn’s dog shares the same name as his character in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Nolan playfully responded by saying it was clearly fate.
Christopher Nolan produced The Odyssey with his wife and frequent collaborator, Emma Thomas. The film features Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, and Zendaya as Athena.
