KNX, the news radio station owned by Audacy in Los Angeles, will stop broadcasting on 97.1 FM. Starting May 11th, that frequency will switch to a sports talk format.
The audio company, based in New York, announced Tuesday that its station in Los Angeles, currently known as the Frequency, will be renamed The Fan. This makes it the first radio station in Los Angeles dedicated entirely to sports on the FM dial.
KLAC, an AM radio station, currently provides sports talk programming. It’s owned by iHeartRadio and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
KNX will remain a 24/7 news station on AM 1070. You can also listen on 97.1 HD2, primarily in cars with digital radio capabilities.
As a huge sports radio fan, I was really interested to hear what Audacy is doing in Los Angeles. Apparently, they’re focusing on giving listeners more local content, and with ‘The Fan,’ they’re planning to fill the airwaves with personalities who really know the area’s sports teams. It sounds like they’re doubling down on local expertise, which I think is great!
According to Oliviero, we’re significantly increasing our local Los Angeles programming – more than doubling what we offered before. We’re maximizing the use of our two broadcast channels to deliver this expanded content.
KNX Newsradio’s listenership has grown by over 25% since it started broadcasting on FM in December 2021. According to Oliviero, Audacy plans to continue with this news format, as many people also listen through the station’s app and online streaming services.
Hollywood Inc.
John Catsimatidis, a successful businessman known for his supermarkets and oil ventures, purchased radio station WABC and dramatically improved its performance, turning it from a struggling station into a leading one.
Audacy is well-known for its successful sports talk radio stations, making it a good choice for advertisers. They hadn’t yet established a presence in Los Angeles, which is one of the largest radio markets in the country.
Oliviero believes the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will probably increase the number of people listening to the station.
The Fan radio station will not be broadcasting live, game-by-game coverage of Los Angeles sports teams. That’s because KLAC currently holds the rights to broadcast the Dodgers, Clippers, Chargers, and UCLA football games.
According to Oliviero, Audacy is interested in obtaining the radio broadcast rights for Los Angeles sports teams when opportunities arise. The station ‘The Fan’ will feature local hosts during the day, complementing the nationally syndicated shows hosted by Dan Patrick and Colin Cowherd on KLAC. KLAC already has a well-known local duo, Petros and Money, for afternoon drive time, and a show dedicated to the Dodgers in the evenings.
Besides KNX, Audacy also owns several other popular radio stations in Los Angeles: KRTH-FM (101.1) plays classic hits, KTWV-FM (94.7) features rhythmic hits, KCBS-FM (93.1) is an adult hits station, and KROQ-FM (106.7) focuses on alternative rock. All these stations broadcast from studios located on the Miracle Mile.
Audacy acquired KNX in 2017 through a merger with CBS Corporation’s radio group. At that time, Audacy was operating under the name Entercom.
