Aubrey Plaza claims she almost married Michael Cera in Las Vegas when high on edibles

Aubrey Plaza ‘bailed’ on her wedding to Michael Cera because they were both ‘high and paranoid.’

The Parks and Recreation star and the actor from Superbad began dating after meeting on the set of the 2010 film, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. She recently shared that they took a road trip across the United States, during which they enjoyed cannabis edibles and playfully discussed getting married in Las Vegas.

Appearing on the SmartLess podcast, the 41-year-old spoke about her former boyfriend, sharing that they remain close friends and she still cares for him deeply. She also revealed they were once very close to getting married.

We took a cross-country road trip, and while high on edibles, impulsively decided to get married in Vegas. The plan was to quickly get divorced afterward, just so we could jokingly refer to each other as our ex-spouse for the rest of our lives.

She added, ‘We thought that would be a really good bit.’

Aubrey explained the ceremony didn’t happen, mainly because Cera is a public figure, and also because they were both feeling anxious and affected by drugs at the time.

She said: ‘It was a combination of being too high and paranoid.

‘At that time, he was very, very famous at that time … Like Superbad, he was so recognizable.

She said she mostly remembered feeling like they’d joined a long line, like at a government office, and then suddenly everyone started running, so they ran too.

‘I’m pretty sure that’s how it went down, we bailed.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Cera’s representatives for comment.

Cera shared a similar story in 2023 but left out mention of edibles.

While driving through Las Vegas, the actor from Superbad jokingly considered impulsively getting married, they told Rolling Stone.

Cera explained they wanted a quick wedding, like at a small Elvis-themed chapel, just to get a marriage certificate. He mentioned the plan was to immediately get divorced afterward, so they could jokingly refer to each other as ‘my ex-husband’ and ‘my ex-wife’ soon after – around age 20.

Aubrey and her previous partner eventually separated. She then married Jeff Baena in 2021, but they also split up in 2024. Tragically, Jeff Baena died by suicide in January 2025 at the age of 47.

The actress is dating Chris Abbott, and they’re going to have a baby.

In the podcast, Aubrey Plaza shared that she’s excited to become a mother and experience what parenthood is like.

She announced that she was pregnant. She admitted it was surprising, and confirmed this was her first child.

When asked about becoming a mother, Aubrey said she’s always dreamed of it and is curious to experience it. She described the idea of motherhood as something fascinating.

Aubrey shared that she’s moved back to New York and intends to raise her child there on the East Coast. She admitted it wasn’t a fully planned decision, but she’s definitely settled on the East Coast.

My family lives primarily in Philadelphia and Delaware. A big reason I returned was to be able to easily take a train and visit them.
