Atomfall is getting a spooky DLC set on an offshore island that also lets you blast pretend pirates with a blunderbuss

Initially, Atomfall didn’t live up to its potential upon release in March, primarily due to its limited combat mechanics and weak stealth and survival elements. However, I found myself captivated by Rebellion’s chilling portrayal of the Lake District as I delved into the enigma surrounding the disaster at the Windscale Power Plant. I eagerly look forward to delving deeper into that world, as additional content for Atomfall is set to arrive on the Cumbrian coast next week.

The Wicked Isle DLC adds a whole new offshore region to Atomfall’s map. Named Midsummer Island, this area unsurprisingly plays on the folk horror elements of the original. Expect to encounter a lot of druids and at least one wicker man, as well as new locations like a ruined abbey, and a pub called the Jolly Angler.

Although Midsummer Island lies in the sea, it is surprisingly nearer to the Windscale plant compared to many parts of Atomfall’s original map. This proximity makes its impact on the island’s inhabitants more pronounced. The residents here face threats not only from pirate-imitating bandits but also peculiar aquatic creatures resembling Witcher’s drowners. To combat these adversaries, you will have access to various new weapons such as a cutlass, “Beekeeper’s Staff”, and a shotgun similar to a blunderbuss, as depicted in the DLC trailer linked above.

In my opinion, I found the druids in Atomfall’s narrative to be relatively weak and stereotypically portrayed as violent nature enthusiasts. However, maybe they will develop these characters more in the DLC, Wicked Isle. Regardless, it’s the new plotlines introduced by Wicked Isle that have my attention most. Atomfall was at its best when revealing the mystery surrounding the Windscale plant and how it connected to the Interchange – a vast underground research facility reminiscent of Black Mesa, hidden below the region.

Instead of having a standalone story, Wicked Isle’s narrative will be woven into the main game. There are numerous clues to discover, some of which will reveal entirely different endings. I enjoyed untangling Atomfall’s plot threads, and my decisions noticeably influenced the outcome, making another playthrough worthwhile.

Wicked Isle arrives on June 3, and will cost $20 (£15) when it does.
