ATHENA makes history as the longest-reigning Ring of Honor World Champion
As a die-hard wrestling fan with decades of watching under my belt, I can confidently say that Athena’s reign as the longest-reigning ROH Champion is nothing short of extraordinary! Her journey, her matches, and her unwavering spirit have truly set the bar for professional wrestling.
Reflect on the significant wrestling history that unfolded within Ring of Honor (ROH). This promotion played a pivotal role in launching some of today’s most renowned professional wrestlers, such as CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole, Kevin Owens, and many others. The ROH Hall of Fame would honor the current favorite performers. However, it is ATHENA who holds a unique place among them all, having reigned as the longest-serving ROH Champion.
On September 15th, Athena surpassed Samoa Joe’s record for the longest reign as ROH Women’s World Champion, having held the title for 646 days. This exceeds Samoa Joe’s previous run as ROH World Champion, which lasted from March 22, 2003, to December 26, 2004, totaling 645 days.
This significant achievement calls for universal acknowledgment. Athena has consistently excelled in the world of professional wrestling and has solidified her position as the premier female wrestler currently active in the industry. Her reign commenced on December 10, 2022, following her victory over Mercedes Martinez. Since then, she’s successfully defended the title 22 times and served as the focal point of Ring of Honor television.
Reflecting on her impressive wrestling journey, I can’t help but marvel at the exceptional matches she delivers. Let me share a few highlights: Her clash with Miyu Yamashita on January 21, 2023, left a lasting impact; then came the intense Chicago Street Fight against Kiera Hogan on June 17, 2023. And who could forget her match against Willow Nightingale on July 21 of the same year? Her performances stand tall alongside any of her peers, regardless of gender or promotion. Though she’s been out due to injury for nearly two months now, her absence from defending the title only underscores why she remains a star in ROH.
Mysteriously, Tony Khan consistently declines to feature Athena on prime-time AEW television, which is problematic in itself. Nonetheless, this doesn’t diminish the impressive work she’s doing or the recognition she deserves during her time at the top. Here’s hoping that she secures a prominent, title-contending role in the upcoming months, especially as AEW plans to visit her home state for All In 2025.
It’s meaningful to present flowers to performers when they are around to accept them. Athena has carved a lasting impression in history, being the longest-reigning Ring of Honor Champion. Take a moment to savor her presence and “Long Live The Reigning Champion.
