Assassin’s Creed Shadows to Have a ‘Canon Mode’ That Removes Narrative Choices
As a long-time Assassin’s Creed fan who has spent countless hours navigating historical landscapes and making crucial narrative choices, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and relief at Ubisoft’s announcement of the ‘Canon Mode’ for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
Ubisoft has announced that “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” will offer a ‘Canonical Play Mode’, allowing players to experience the game’s plot uninterrupted by story-based decisions.
As a dedicated fan, I appreciate the thoughtful consideration given to the player’s experience during character interactions and alliance building, as shared by Creative Director Jonathan Dumont. To cater to our diverse fan base with varying opinions on dialogue choices, they’ve introduced an option known as ‘Canon Mode’. This feature lets you enjoy the game without making your own choices, providing a hassle-free experience instead. As he mentioned during his Reddit AMA, it’s all about ensuring fun for everyone!
In addition, Dumont points out that while the game “Shadows” features an open-world setting, the storyline will progress in a predominantly sequential manner, commencing in 1579 and proceeding chronologically from the unique viewpoints of Naoe and Yasuke. Essentially, parts of the narrative may be presented in a non-linear fashion as memories, according to Dumont. He believes that players will value the richness and depth that flashbacks and memories will add to the game’s world and characters.
Charles Benoit, the Game Director, notes that characters brought on as allies (who can be chosen to aid during battles or covert sequences) will each have their unique story, mission, and skills, with some excelling in combat while others are skilled stealth operatives akin to shinobi. He personally prefers to utilize Stealth ally alongside Yasuke for expanded stealth tactics, he mentioned.
In terms of the conclusion of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” storyline, regardless if you’re playing with Canon Mode or story-based choices enabled, rest assured it all leads to a singular ending. As stated by Associate Narrative Director Brooke Davies, “The narrative of Shadows culminates in one unified, canonical ending.” However, there are various routes leading up to this conclusion, and these paths will significantly impact who stands (or doesn’t) beside you during the journey.
The wait for our series delving into Feudal Japan isn’t much longer now! The upcoming installment, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, is set to release on 14th February 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. If you’re curious about the game’s stealth features, you can find more information here. And if you’d like to learn about its combat mechanics, you can read up on that here.
