As return of excellent police drama Blue Lights approaches, show creators land brand-new BBC drama

Good news for fans of the BBC police drama Blue Lights: season four is expected in September 2026, and the show’s creators are also working on a brand-new drama series.

The BBC has ordered a new drama series called D-Notice, created and written by Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn, the team behind Blue Light.

The new show will have six episodes and be filmed in both Belfast and London, according to Radio Times.

This series, called a compelling drama exploring the relationship between truth and power, will be shaped by the creators’ experience as investigative journalists.

The series centers around the D-Notice, a request from the British government asking journalists not to publish information they believe could harm national security. It’s important to note that this request is voluntary, not a legal order.

After the success of The Salisbury Poisonings and Blue Lights, D-Notice is the third collaboration between Patterson and Lawn and the BBC.

BBC drama head Lindsay Salt recently explained to Deadline that she wanted to keep the writers of D-Notice within the BBC, as she believes they are among the most talented in the industry.

We were discussing some potential projects and realized it had been a while since we’d created a really gripping conspiracy thriller. That’s when they suggested D-Notice.

I just finished watching Blue Lights and it’s seriously gripping! It follows these rookie cops in Belfast, and it really throws you into the intense, everyday pressures they face. Siân Brooke is fantastic, and the cast including Katherine Devlin, Nathan Braniff, and Richard Dormer are all amazing too. It’s a really realistic look at what it’s like to be on the force.

Production is underway on the fourth season, and the BBC has shared a brief description of what viewers can expect.

I’ve been following Constables Grace Ellis, Tommy Foster, and Annie Conlon since they started as response officers, and honestly, after three years, they’re really feeling the strain. Things are getting tougher on the streets, and it feels like the police are struggling to keep up with this new threat they’re facing. It’s worrying to see how much they’re dealing with!

The trial of Gerry Cliff for murder is bringing a hidden and dangerous secret to light, causing disruption within the police force and throughout the city’s criminal networks.

Grace, Tommy, and Annie are at a turning point in their lives, and they’ll need to be brave as they confront a dangerous truth that could change everything.

Last year, Digital Spy highlighted the new villain in season 3 of Blue Lights, calling them the show’s best villain so far and describing them as ‘deliciously evil.’

The latest issue of Living Legends, a vibrant, full-colour 100-page tribute to Taylor Swift, is now available! You can purchase it at newsagents or online for only £8.99.
