The acclaimed sci-fi drama For All Mankind returns to Apple TV soon, making now a great time to discover or revisit the series starring Joel Kinnaman. Apple TV has consistently delivered high-quality science fiction shows recently, establishing itself as a leading platform for the genre.
Apple TV+ has quickly become known for its high-quality original shows, but it actually started experimenting with science fiction early on. One of its first original series was For All Mankind, and it’s consistently improved over the years, becoming a standout program.
Sci-Fi Fans Shouldn’t Miss Apple TV’s For All Mankind
For All Mankind is a science fiction drama centered around astronaut Ed Baldwin, played by Joel Kinnaman. The show imagines a different version of history where the Soviet Union beat the United States to the moon. This event motivates the US to push even harder in the space race.
This leads to rapid technological progress and a widespread understanding that science and teamwork benefit everyone. The show begins in the 1970s, and each new season jumps forward a decade, often featuring a significantly different cast.
Joel Kinnaman’s Character Is A Key To For All Mankind’s Success
Joel Kinnaman plays Ed Baldwin, a character who has been in every season of For All Mankind. The character is inspired by real-life Apollo 10 commander Thomas P. Stafford. Throughout the show’s four seasons—covering four decades—Ed consistently proves why NASA relies on him for their toughest challenges.
Ed is a key figure in the success of For All Mankind. Appearing in every season of the long-running show, he connects the different eras and characters. Importantly, he’s a compelling character in his own right, not simply someone who exists to explain the plot.
For All Mankind Returns For Season 5 In March 2026 (& A Spinoff Is On The Way)
The fourth season of For All Mankind concluded on January 12, 2024, and Apple TV+ has announced a fifth season. The new season will premiere on March 27, 2026, with episodes released weekly on Fridays. It will consist of ten episodes.
In addition to the upcoming fifth season of For All Mankind, a new spin-off series is being created, according to Variety. This spin-off, titled Star City, will be set in the 1970s and explore the Soviet space program. While Star City doesn’t have a release date yet, fans can look forward to season 5 of For All Mankind in the meantime.
