As a huge TV fan, I’ve noticed something really interesting lately: Apple TV has become the place to find genuinely great, high-quality shows. While other streamers seem focused on adapting existing properties – like HBO with Harry Potter and zombie games, or Netflix diving into true crime – Apple’s been consistently delivering incredible original series. Seriously, from the mind-bending Severance to the fascinating look behind the scenes with The Studio, the thought-provoking Pluribus, and the feel-good charm of Ted Lasso, Apple TV has given us some of the very best television we’ve seen in years. They’re quietly building an amazing catalog!
Apple has become a leader in streaming quality by following a strategy similar to what Netflix and HBO once did: investing in bold ideas, supporting talented creators, and allowing shows time to develop. This patience is what most other streaming services lack. While Netflix is quick to cancel shows after one season, Apple often renews them for two, like with Silo, giving the creators time to finish their stories properly. They even greenlit two seasons of Pluribus based solely on the strong reputation of creator Vince Gilligan.
Apple TV+’s Slow Horses has quietly become a major success. While critics have consistently loved the show for five seasons, it’s only recently gained widespread popularity. Due to this growing success, Apple has already renewed Slow Horses for two more seasons, seasons six and seven.
Which Books Slow Horses Seasons 6 & 7 Will Adapt
Slow Horses offers a realistic and down-to-earth take on the world of spies, reminiscent of John le Carré’s suspenseful novels rather than the more fantastical James Bond stories. However, it’s not as dark or intensely realistic as le Carré’s work. Instead, it’s a clever and funny satire that points out how often spy work is actually quite ordinary.
The TV series Slow Horses is based on Mick Herron’s Slough House novels. It’s set in a depressing department of MI5 where agents who’ve fallen out of favor are sent to do boring, dead-end work, hoping they’ll quit. Gary Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, the sharp-tongued and cynical head of this department, while Jack Lowden stars as River Cartwright, a promising agent whose enthusiasm clashes with Lamb’s jaded outlook.
The TV series Slow Horses has covered the first five books in the series – Slow Horses, Dead Lions, Real Tigers, Spook Street, and London Rules – each over its first five seasons. Season six will adapt the novels Joe Country and Slough House, and season seven will be based on Bad Actors.
Over The Past 5 Seasons, Slow Horses Has Only Improved
From the start, Slow Horses was an exceptional show, launching with a fantastic first season. It’s consistently improved since then, with the actors becoming more confident in their roles and the writers skillfully expanding on the original stories, leading to each season being better than the last.
Despite having the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of the entire series, Season 1 still received a remarkably high 95% rating. Seasons 2 and 4 both earned a perfect 100% approval from critics, while Seasons 3 and 5 were almost as well-received.
How Long Slow Horses Could Potentially Run For On Apple TV
The Slough House series currently includes fifteen books: nine novels, five shorter stories (novellas), and one collection. The five novellas – The List, The Marylebone Drop, The Catch, The Last Dead Letter, and Standing by the Wall – could potentially be turned into episodes for the TV show, though they might not provide enough content for a complete season.
With season 6 combining two novels into one, only one book remains for the show to adapt: Clown Town, scheduled for release in 2025. However, because Mick Herron continues to write and publish the Slow Horses novels—a contrast to authors like George R.R. Martin—the series could potentially continue for many years.
