Anson Mount wants Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to respect canon
As a dedicated Star Trek enthusiast who’s been following the franchise since my childhood, I can attest to the emotional rollercoaster that comes with each new installment. The fear of creative teams disregarding established lore is a constant concern for us fans – it’s like watching your favorite family heirloom being carelessly handled.
Star Trek’s continuous 60-year journey has provided fans with an extensive, interlinked franchise of unparalleled quality. It has also cultivated a level of apprehension in fans that is second to none. This is because with every new year, every fresh series or movie, and every new creative team, there exists the potential for some individuals not to uphold the existing canon.
Reflecting on the fact that our continued existence for 60 years is due to the established history and lore, modifying or disregarding it feels unsettling to the fanbase. It’s hard to act as if past events don’t matter, especially when those events are the very foundation of your current employment.
So respecting that lore is important. So it’s great to hear that Anson Mount, the man who brings Captain Christopher Pike to live on the hit series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, is all about protecting canon. He recently spoke at the 2024 Star Trek: Las Vegas convention (via ScreenRant) where he spoke about respecting the end-game for his character.
“…But in general, I think I would like to stick with canon, and just, maybe, from a different point of view. Maybe from Pike’s point of view. So that’s all I’ll say about that.”
Previously, Strange New Worlds delved into and examined concepts beyond established canon by introducing the Gorn. However, this alien race was initially quite underdeveloped, leaving ample opportunities to explore fresh narratives around them. Interestingly, subtle modifications and additional exploration of the species have only served to enhance their portrayal.
They significantly increased the level of suspense surrounding them, making them much more intriguing and captivating. If Star Trek: Enterprise hadn’t slightly modified their portrayal in their series, it’s possible that the franchise might have avoided them, but ultimately, this wasn’t the direction they chose to go.
One option for paraphrasing the provided text could be: To make the franchise even stronger, it’s crucial to develop a more compelling villain. However, the series risks losing support from fans if they change the tragic end of Captain Pike’s storyline, erasing his fateful outcome. Such a move might cause viewers to turn against the show and dissolve the goodwill generated by the fanbase, potentially damaging future projects led by this creative team.
