Anne Hathaway’s Mother Mary Has a Surprising Taylor Swift Connection

Anne Hathaway has a packed schedule in 2026 with several new movies coming out, including the eagerly awaited…

A psychological drama from A24 was first announced in March 2023, and after three years, it’s finally hitting theaters on April 17th. The promotional tour is now underway, and director David Lowery recently revealed to Empire magazine a surprising connection to Taylor Swift.

Mother Mary Draws Inspiration From Taylor Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour Concert Film

Throughout her career, Anne Hathaway has been involved in many large-scale events. Though the billion-dollar event is her most well-known, it wasn’t the basis for her later movie. She actually drew inspiration from an earlier concert tour instead.

The new psychological drama, Mother Mary, centers on a complex relationship that develops between pop star Mary and fashion designer Sam. They reconnect when Mary needs a dress designed for her upcoming tour, leading to a deeply intimate and emotionally charged connection.

Lowery described his vision for the character of Mother Mary, saying he drew inspiration from Taylor Swift. He envisioned her as someone who might be Taylor Swift in a decade or so, imagining what the singer’s persona could evolve into over time.

The director also shared that the new film, with music from Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff (a frequent collaborator with Taylor Swift), and fka twigs, was heavily inspired by Taylor Swift. He specifically praised Swift’s Reputation concert film, calling it “one of the best ever” and explaining that his team repeatedly referenced it while filming the concert sequences. He added that they spent a surprising amount of time discussing Swift’s work.

As a huge Taylor Swift fan, I remember when her Reputation Stadium Tour concert film dropped on Netflix at the very end of 2018. It was amazing! But it disappeared after its licensing ran out five years later, and honestly, I was a little bummed. Now, it looks like Taylor’s exclusively working with Disney+ for all her concert movies and documentaries, so I don’t think we’ll see it return to Netflix anytime soon.

The filmmaker explained that due to budget constraints, they meticulously analyzed three songs from Reputation. They went through each song frame by frame, estimating the visual effects costs for each shot as if they were actually filming it.

The filmmaker said they used Taylor Swift’s Reputation tour as a financial benchmark. They were struggling to figure out how to stage a large-scale concert in a stadium with limited funds, and Reputation provided a practical example to follow. They could talk about how helpful it was ‘all day’.

In addition to Anne Hathaway in the lead role, the film features Michaela Coel as her love interest, Sam Anselm. Other cast members include FKA Twigs, Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Alba Baptista, Sian Clifford, and Jessica Brown Findlay.

Mother Mary Kicks Off an Anne Hathaway-Filled Year

The film Mother Mary is the first project to feature Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway, and she’s already working with the same team on another film. Soon after Mother Mary is released, Hathaway will reprise her role in a sequel to her popular, beloved movie.

Anne Hathaway has several exciting projects coming up. This summer, she’ll be working with Christopher Nolan again on the historical film The Odyssey. Soon after, she’ll appear in The End of Oak Street, followed by Verity later in the year. Beyond those, she’s also filming Ron Howard’s war drama Alone at Dawn, an adaptation of the upcoming novel Yesteryear, and the long-awaited The Princess Diaries 3.

Mother Mary will be released in limited theaters on Apr. 17 before expanding on Apr. 24.
