Anne Hathaway glows in transparent gown at Mother Mary premiere as film draws ‘blasphemous’ backlash

All eyes were on Anne Hathaway as she attended the New York City premiere of her new and somewhat controversial film, Mother Mary, on Monday.

The 43-year-old actress turned heads in a stunning, see-through gown by Lever Couture, crafted from delicate, shimmering ribbons.

The celebrity completed their look with silver Christian Louboutin heels and Bulgari diamond and emerald jewelry – earrings and rings – valued at more than $100,000, as reported by In Style.

I’ve been following the buzz around this new film, and it’s already causing quite a stir! Some people are really upset by it, even calling it disrespectful and saying it makes fun of Christianity. It seems the religious symbols and the film’s title are what’s really getting under people’s skin.

Anne Hathaway was accompanied by several celebrities at the premiere, including 32-year-old country pop singer Kelsea Ballerini.

Kelsea Ballerini turned heads with a bold outfit, wearing a white blazer and pants with no bra underneath.

Meanwhile singer FKA twigs, 38, stunned in a Victorian-inspired beige corset dress.

She paired the eye-popping look with chunky black platform heels.

FKA twigs appears on the soundtrack for the new film, Mother Mary: Greatest Hits, which comes out on April 17th.

Michaela Coel, who starred alongside Hathaway, was also at the event. She looked stunning in a pale pink halter top paired with black pants.

The movie’s first trailer came out in December and showed Anne Hathaway playing a glamorous pop star performing for a huge crowd, dressed in sparkling outfits.

Anne Hathaway transformed into the troubled singer with a stunning, glamorous makeover, complete with striking two-toned platinum hair styled by hair and makeup artist Heike Merker.

The singer didn’t need to pretend much, as she performed original songs written by Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX, and FKA Twigs.

The movie’s promotional materials are causing a lot of discussion among fans. Some people are upset by the religious imagery, especially depictions connected to the Virgin Mary.

‘That is highly disrespectful,’ one commentator wrote on X, after the trailer was released.

‘No thanks I don’t mock God,’ another added.

‘So disrespectful, yikes.’

‘I hope this isn’t picking at religious beliefs,’ someone else added. 

‘Anne you lost me on this one!’ yet another fan added. 

That’s really disappointing. I used to respect you, Anne, but this feels incredibly disrespectful. And just so you know, I’ve seen the trailer – I don’t want you to claim this movie isn’t connected to the story of Holy Mary. Even if it isn’t directly about her, what’s the reason for using Christian imagery?

The A24 epic melodrama wrapped on July 20, 2024 after nine months due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Hathaway described playing Mother Mary as a deeply impactful and life-changing experience, calling it one of the most remarkable things she’d ever done.

The intriguing new feminist film features Hunter Schafer, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Alba Baptista, who is married to Chris Evans.

Mother Mary is set to hit theaters April 17.
