Annapurna Interactive's Entire Staff Resign and Walk Out Following Dispute With Owner

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from game-breaking bugs to studio closures. However, the recent mass resignation at Annapurna Interactive is something new and concerning.

The entire team at Annapurna Interactive has collectively left their positions due to a disagreement over leadership with their wealthy proprietor, Megan Ellison.

The entire Annapurna Interactive team, numbering 25 people, collectively chose to step down, as President Nathan Gary and the previous staff communicated in a joint statement to Bloomberg (via IGN). They emphasized that this was one of the most challenging decisions they’ve ever had to make, and it wasn’t a decision made lightly.

Previously employed Epic Games executive Hector Sanchez will assume Gary’s position upon his departure. This move comes after Gary was reinstated as president of interactive and new media, with the aim of maintaining Annapurna Interactive’s brand following a wave of employee departures due to dissatisfaction.

Ellison shared with Bloomberg that our main focus remains on assisting our developer and publishing partners during this change. We’re dedicated not just to our current game lineup but also to broadening our influence in the interactive sector. As we seek out chances for a more unified method of storytelling across film, TV, gaming, and theatre that integrates both linear and interactive narratives, we will continue to explore these opportunities.

Annapurna Interactive is primarily recognized for publishing games such as Cocoon, Gorogoa, Outer Wilds, Neon White, Stray, The Artful Escape, and What Remains of Edith Finch. However, there have been allegations that it promotes toxic work cultures within its partner studios. On the other hand, its parent company, Annapurna Pictures, is currently collaborating with Remedy Entertainment to finance Control 2, and is also involved in producing Alan Wake and Control series for TV, films, and more.
