Anna Maxwell Martin and Shaun Evans’ new true-crime drama is the genre at its best
As a gamer with a penchant for true-crime dramas, I found “Until I Kill You” to be a gripping and emotionally charged series that truly resonated with me. The narrative structure, focusing on the psychological impact of a killer rather than his motivations, felt refreshingly unique and allowed for a deeper exploration of the survivor’s experience.
In my excitement, I’d like to share that the thrilling true-crime drama “Until I Kill You,” now airing on ITV, has me hooked! This gripping tale stars none other than Shaun Evans, known for his roles in “Endeavor” and “Vigil,” as well as Anna Maxwell Martin, a familiar face from “Line of Duty” and “Ludwig.” In this chilling series, they portray John Sweeney, a murderer, and Delia Balmer, a nurse, respectively.
The four-part series uses Balmer’s memoir Living with a Serial Killer as its window into the real-life crime story. It’s a smart choice and one that shifts the focus away from the killer, allowing for one of the women to control the narrative.
This television series, titled “Until I Kill You“, offers a thoughtful exploration. Similar to other dramas in its category, like Netflix’s latest “Woman of the Hour“, it chooses not to delve deeply into the background or reasons behind the antagonist’s actions. Instead, it focuses squarely on the emotional and psychological turmoil experienced by those who unwittingly crossed paths with him.
In the first half-hour of the performance, John Sweeney is yet to be introduced. Prior to this, the enigmatic man whom Delia encountered at the pub is merely referred to as “John,” with his true identity remaining a secret beneath the mask he presents.
The narrative skillfully navigates significant milestones in their relationship by employing time leaps. This method effectively maintains the pace of the story while providing ample background for our engagement. This aspect is vital to comprehend Delia’s connection with John, and it serves as a counterargument against the outdated and misinformed “Why didn’t you leave sooner?” questions that can haunt survivors.
The phrase “Until I Kill You” creates an intense ambiance by gradually revealing changes in their connection, subtly hinted at through Sweeney’s speech and behavior.
Following their initial meeting, Delia asks John to leave her residence due to a small spill of tea. At first glance, it appears that Delia is in control, with John departing humbly, like a dog tucking its tail.
As time goes by and my relationship with Delia deepens, I find myself gripping tighter and tighter. It sets me off when another guy compliments her dress at a gathering, which leads me to act immaturely by urinating in the yard, embarrassing her in front of her colleagues and pals. After she invites me to move in with her, and I’m now firmly entrenched in her life, I start dropping hints about my “perfect” ex-girlfriend, intentionally eroding Delia’s self-esteem.
The close-up, homebound sequences inside Delia’s residence create an intensely confined and anxious viewing atmosphere.
In episode one’s conclusion, John completely removes his disguise, marking a significant shift in their relationship. During an evening out, he abruptly orders Delia to “take a seat” and cease dancing, making her feel embarrassed as she believes everyone is watching – it’s worth noting that her lively spirit and passion for dancing initially attracted him the night they first met.
In the final scenes of the episode, John’s aggressive behavior towards Delia reaches its peak. He confesses to having murdered his former partner and lunges at Delia brandishing a knife.
The narrative that unfolds next is a heart-wrenching portrayal of Delia’s ordeals in the ensuing days, with the storytelling primarily conveyed through expressive facial expressions and strategic use of sound. Until I Kill You skillfully employs strategically chosen camera angles and close-ups to emphasize emotional moments, rather than graphically depicting violent incidents for shock value.
This decision not just shows ethical intelligence, but it also significantly enhances the horror and suspense when watching, making it all the more unsettling.
In other words, “Until I Kill You” effectively illustrates the intense final assault endured by Delia without being overly graphic or sensationalistic. The scene is briefly shown in a realistic manner initially, followed by a powerful dialogue revealing the gruesome details later on. Flashbacks are used to revisit this event, contributing to the narrative and developing Delia’s character.
The song “Until I Kill You” presents a backdrop where other women gather around Delia, introducing intricacy and reflecting how women often exchange experiences and support each other.
I can’t help but resonate with the frustrating interactions I’ve had with certain male police officers, as a fellow officer watches with concern. This situation seems to underscore a broader issue, where women’s viewpoints are frequently questioned and challenged. These instances serve as a commentary on a widespread female experience, where our lived realities are often undermined and scrutinized.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but be captivated by the mesmerizing performances of Shaun Evans and Anna Maxwell Martin. Evans, in his role, possesses an uncanny ability to transform my feelings towards his character with a single, powerfully delivered facial expression or line. On the other hand, Martin breathes life into survivor Delia, seamlessly balancing vulnerability and strength that leaves me awestruck.
Watching “Until I Kill You” may not provide pleasure or amusement due to its heavy and somber topic. However, it undeniably showcases exceptional skill in the realm of true-crime dramas.
From November 3rd to November 6th, the show “Until I Kill You” will be broadcasted on ITV1 and ITVX at 9 pm each night. On November 7th, a documentary titled “Until I Kill You: The Real Story” will follow.
