An Elden Ring Movie Is in the Works for Some Reason
Excitedly speaking, I can hardly contain my enthusiasm as I share this fantastic news: The unstoppable phenomenon known as Elden Ring, masterfully crafted by Bandai Namco and FromSoftware, is set to leap from the gaming world onto the silver screen! And get this—a renowned figure in the realm of science fiction cinema and literature has already joined the project.
As reported by Deadline, the upcoming Elden Ring movie is set to be produced by independent studio A24, who are also involved in the production of the Death Stranding film adaptation. However, adapting Elden Ring may prove to be a more complex task than Kojima’s game, which already has a cinematic feel to it.
Alex Garland, known for movies such as “Annihilation,” “Ex Machina,” and the latest “Warfare” – a gritty portrayal of the Iraq war, is in charge of the project. Additionally, he will be handling the scriptwriting.
The co-writer of Elden Ring, George R.R. Martin, is set to produce the film, yet there’s no indication in the report by Deadline whether FromSoftware or Hidetaka Miyazaki will be part of the project, which might imply they aren’t involved.
It’s worth noting that while movies and games are distinct industries, it can be disconcerting that the main creative mind behind Elden Ring doesn’t seem to be involved in the upcoming movie. Perhaps he’s fully engaged with his next project, an exclusive for Switch 2 titled The Duskbloods, slated for release next year.
It’s just my personal opinion, but an Elden Ring film appears rather unpromising at first glance. You see, FromSoftware’s open-world masterpiece is unique because it delivers its story in a piecemeal, non-chronological manner. It seems challenging to adapt that style into a two-hour movie which follows a more traditional, straightforward narrative structure.
Garland may not be the most obvious pick to direct Elden Ring, but he does have a strong background in intelligent fantasy and sci-fi storytelling, which makes him a contender. However, I can’t help but feel that Elden Ring might be too complex to adapt for film, potentially placing A24 and Garland in a challenging situation.
It’s going to be a couple of years before we see the Elden Ring movie at the earliest. However, if you’re yearning for more Elden Ring action right now, you can look forward to the upcoming multiplayer spinoff titled Elden Ring Nightreign, which is set to release next week.
