‘American Idol’ adds Carrie Underwood to its panel of judges, replacing Katy Perry
As a longtime fan of American Idol and Carrie Underwood, I’m absolutely thrilled to see these two powerhouses coming together! Carrie’s journey from winning Idol to becoming an eight-time Grammy winner is nothing short of incredible. It just goes to show that the Idol stage truly does launch careers into the stratosphere!
It’s all coming full circle for Carrie Underwood.
Country music legend, winner of a Grammy, is coming back to her origins as she signs up for ABC’s “American Idol” as a judge. In the upcoming season set to air next year, the singer behind “Before He Cheats,” who won the competition in 2005, will be on the judge’s side, helping Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan discover a fresh musical talent.
“Reflecting back, I transitioned from being unknown to having over 10 million viewers tuning in to my show – a transformation I’m incredibly proud of. I’m proud of all the achievements I made on this show and everything else I’ve accomplished since then.”
In a turn of events, the Season 4 winner of “American Idol” and a Country Music Hall of Famer will fill the vacant judge’s seat once held by Katy Perry, who officially announced her exit in February. Known for her hit “Woman’s World,” Perry shared the news on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, expressing her intention to dedicate more time to her musical career again.
“Perry once expressed her deep affection for ‘Idol’, stating, ‘It’s connected me with the soul of America, but now I must venture out to feel the rhythm of my personal heartbeat.'”
In 2018, Perry started appearing as a judge on the show, working alongside Richie and Bryan for seven seasons. However, her time on “American Idol” wasn’t always met with approval from fans. The pop star, known for her hit “California Gurls,” received criticism several times due to her conduct on-screen, including allegations of “mom-shaming” a contestant. Last year, she made news when she passionately spoke out against gun violence in the United States after a contestant shared his experience of surviving a school shooting, and this was another point of contention among viewers.
Regarding the divided response from fans, Perry expressed in February that she might consider rejoining “American Idol” following the completion of her current creative endeavor.
Ryan Seacrest, who has been a longstanding host, will once again lead when “American Idol” begins its Season 23 (its 8th season on ABC) in the springtime next year. The nationwide hunt for contestants, known as “Idol Across America,” kicks off on August 12 with auditions in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. California, along with other states, will host “American Idol” auditions on August 19. The show will conduct several open calls from late August to mid-September.
“American Idol” crowned Abi Carter, a 21-year-old singer from Indio, as its latest victor in May.
