Susan Lucci is at last addressing the long-running questions about her many unsuccessful nominations at award shows.
In her new memoir, La Lucci, released this Tuesday, 79-year-old Susan Lucci openly discusses the surprising fact that she lost the Daytime Emmy for Lead Actress 18 times in a row for her iconic role as Erica Kane on All My Children. She also clarifies that, despite what people might think, she wasn’t as upset about it as rumors have suggested.
People always want to know how I felt after losing the Emmy so many times. Honestly? It wasn’t good. It really stung each time to sit there and hear someone else’s name called – it took a real emotional toll on me, year after year.
After her ninth loss, she admits she developed a kind of emotional defense mechanism.
She described a strange disconnect, saying her hearing felt ‘numb’ – she could listen, but not truly hear. While she genuinely celebrated her colleagues’ successes, she realized it was often a way to shield herself from disappointment and avoid getting her hopes too high.
What Lucci is emphatic about, however, is what didn’t happen once the cameras stopped rolling.
She clarified that, contrary to what people might have heard, there weren’t any dramatic outbursts or incidents backstage after the show, and she definitely didn’t break anything because she didn’t win an Emmy.
Instead, the actress says she returned home to what mattered most: her children, Liza Huber, now 50, and Andreas Huber, now 36, whom she shares with her late husband Helmut Huber.
Her family welcomed her home with a flurry of affection – hugs, kisses, handmade signs, balloons, sweet notes, and even a freshly baked chocolate cake.
Lucci joked that each of these things meant more to her than finally winning an Emmy. But she quickly added with a smile that actually winning did feel amazing – winning is always the best!
That long-awaited win finally came in 1999, when Lucci took home the trophy on her 19th nomination.
She was deeply moved as she thanked her colleagues, family, teachers, and Agnes Nixon, the creator of All My Children, while accepting the award.
She said she was incredibly grateful to be surrounded by such talented and dedicated people, and that she would always cherish the fact that her work had been recognized nineteen times.
She also thanked the show’s dedicated fans, pointing out that Kane was originally only supposed to make guest appearances.
I was originally scheduled to appear only every other Tuesday,” Lucci explained. “But because of your incredible support, I’m here, and I promise to always give it my all and not disappoint you.” She committed to being back at work the following Monday, ready to fully embrace the beloved character.
Susan Lucci played the character of Kane on the ABC soap opera All My Children for the show’s entire 41-year run, from 1970 until it ended in 2011. She has written about how upsetting the cancellation was in her autobiography.
She expressed deep sadness about the show being canceled, saying it felt like a painful breakup for everyone involved, including the fans and cast. She was shocked and didn’t want it to happen.
The memoir also fondly remembers Lucci’s long-lasting romance with her husband, Helmut Huber, whom she paid tribute to once more in December 2023 when receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Having her family watch her perform, especially her son Andreas, made the experience even more special for Lucci – it was the perfect finishing touch.
She shared a touching tribute to her late husband, Helmut, whom she called the love of her life. Becoming emotional, she also felt her father-in-law’s presence that evening. She acknowledged that grief is a painful part of loving someone, but insisted that every moment of that love was worth the pain.
Lucci remembered Huber—her manager and the head of Pine Valley Productions—as an incredibly charismatic and energetic person. She highlighted his funny personality, strong support, and constant encouragement of her work.
