The Zcash community is eagerly awaiting the activation of its Ironwood upgrade on July 28th, expected to happen at block 3,428,143.
The Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL) recently announced on X that the Ironwood upgrade will launch in just two days. According to their post from July 26th, ZODL stated that Ironwood delivers both privacy and transparency for users – you shouldn’t have to give up one for the other.

Ironwood is an upcoming upgrade to the Zcash network designed to allow users to personally confirm the total amount of Zcash in circulation. It’s planned to launch as part of network update NU6.3 around 12:00 p.m. UTC on July 28th, at block height 3,428,143.
Ironwood was created to address a serious flaw in Zcash’s privacy features—specifically, the Orchard shielded pool—that was discovered by security researcher Taylor Hornby at Shielded Labs. The Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL) quickly fixed the issue with an emergency update and doesn’t believe anyone actually took advantage of the vulnerability.

Because transaction details on Orchard are hidden, users have no way to confirm whether fake ZEC coins were made before the security flaw was resolved. Ironwood solves this by building a fresh, secure pool with the fixed Orchard code and then locking the original, potentially flawed Orchard pool.
After the Ironwood update, sending or receiving ZEC directly within the Orchard pool will no longer be possible. To move funds out of the pool, users will need to use Zcash’s standard turnstile mechanism, which ensures that no more ZEC can leave than was originally deposited.
Why Ironwood matters
Ironwood has closed down the old Orchard pool and secured the original one. They’ve installed a brand-new pool that uses the updated and fixed Orchard system.
This update safeguards against fake Zcash potentially inflating its total amount in circulation. After the Ironwood upgrade, any funds leaving the initial system must pass through a single, controlled point.
Ironwood ensures Zcash’s supply limits are reliably maintained, and anyone operating a network node can independently confirm this.
As we upgrade to Ironwood, I anticipate some temporary disruptions are possible. Specifically, exchanges, wallets, and other service providers that haven’t fully updated to the new system might temporarily pause deposits, withdrawals, or other functions. We’re working to minimize these impacts, but users should be aware that brief service interruptions could occur.
