Alien: Romulus overtakes Deadpool & Wolverine with $100 million debut
As a lifelong fan of the Alien franchise, I must say that the release of Alien: Romulus has been nothing short of exhilarating! It’s not every day that we see a film knocking giants like Deadpool & Wolverine off their box-office throne. The sheer thrill and terror reminiscent of the first movie, coupled with the familiarity that long-term fans might appreciate, makes Alien: Romulus a must-watch for any sci-fi horror enthusiast.
In a striking turn of events, the new movie, Romulus, has managed to surpass both Deadpool and Wolverine in ticket sales at the US box office, marking an impressive start for it.
As reported by Variety, the newest installment of the Alien series brought in an impressive $41.5 million in the U.S. box office, and a mind-blowing $108.2 million worldwide.
As a hardcore gamer here, let me spill the beans on the latest box office buzz. Just a few weeks back, it was all about Deadpool and Wolverine ruling the roost as they smashed the record for highest-grossing R-rated movies ever. But boy, oh boy! The arrival of Alien: Romulus has shaken things up big time. This newcomer has managed to boot our Marvel buddies off their three-week reign at the box office.
20 years post the Alien incidents, Romulus unfolds the tale of Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and fellow space settlers who embark on a salvage operation. Their journey ultimately brings them to the abandoned Renaissance, a once operational space station.
Shortly following their arrival, the team finds themselves in a struggle for survival, confronting menacing and dangerous organisms.
In a three-star evaluation, Digital Spy commented: “When it comes to providing chills, Alien: Romulus certainly delivers, and depending on your comfort level, it may even leave you terrified. However, for dedicated fans, they might not be as scared as expected, despite one sequence reminiscent of the Aliens movie. For the most part, this film leans more towards the survival horror genre that was present in the original Alien movie.”
Under the guidance of director Fede Alvarez, this film has garnered the second-largest opening weekend within the Alien series to date, and it currently flaunts a remarkable 81% approval rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
In different locations, Blake Lively’s film adaption of “It Ends With Us” has amassed an impressive $180 million worldwide after only ten days since its premiere. After a powerful opening weekend with $50 million earnings, the movie’s ticket sales dropped by 52% in its second weekend.
As a dedicated moviegoer, I was rooting for the success of the superhero adventure sequel, but unfortunately, it fell just short of securing second place at the box-office. Despite this, the movie managed to rake in an impressive $29 million in its earnings, which is certainly something to celebrate! However, Deadpool and Wolverine proved to be formidable opponents, pulling ahead in the race.
Alien: Romulus is out in cinemas now. Previous films are available on Disney+.
