Alec Baldwin is joining the cast of “Kockroach,” a new crime thriller set in New York City. The film is directed by Matt Ross, who also directed “Captain Fantastic,” and is based on a 2007 novel by William Lashner, writing as Tyler Knox. This role marks Baldwin’s return to a major film project following the 2021 “Rust” tragedy. He will star alongside Chris Hemsworth, Taron Egerton, and Zazie Beetz in the upcoming gangster film.
After the tragic shooting on the set of Rust – where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed after a prop gun containing a live round accidentally discharged – Alec Baldwin dealt with significant legal issues, personal struggles, and career setbacks. While he initially focused on reality TV and independent films after the involuntary manslaughter charges were dropped, he seems to be rebuilding his career, highlighted by his unexpected return to Saturday Night Live (SNL) in 2024.
It’s currently unknown how important a role Stephen Baldwin will have in Kockroach, as details about his character are being kept secret. The story, which follows a mysterious stranger rising through New York’s criminal ranks to become a powerful crime boss, includes several key characters like a crime boss, a gangster, and a small-time criminal – all of whom are expected to appear in the film adaptation.
The film Kockroach has faced several changes in its cast due to scheduling issues. First, Hemsworth replaced Channing Tatum as the lead in February, and later, Egerton joined the project after Oscar Isaac had to withdraw in late 2025. Now, it seems like the movie is moving forward, with filming set to begin in April 2026. Ross will direct, using a script by Jonathan Ames, who made some final revisions before production.
Chris Hemsworth is an ideal lead for this project, especially after his success in the crime thriller Crime 101, adapted from Don Winslow’s 2020 novella. While the film didn’t perform well at the box office, critics (89%) and audiences (85%) on Rotten Tomatoes generally liked it, and Hemsworth’s performance received a lot of praise. Many considered it his best work yet, demonstrating his acting abilities beyond his popular role as the energetic Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
