Every season of Married at First Sight Australia, there’s always one contestant – typically a bride who isn’t afraid to speak her mind – who becomes the target of public criticism.
This year, that role has fallen squarely on Bec Zacharia.
People have very different opinions of her. Some see a misunderstood person who’s unfairly criticized, while others view her as one of the season’s worst villains with no redeeming qualities.
No matter how you look at it, it’s clear the criticism of Bec has gone far beyond typical reality TV drama and has become something much more serious.
I had a conversation with Bec this week. We both agreed we could talk about anything, even the troubling rumors spreading online about her – specifically, accusations of alcohol and drug use – and the harsh online abuse she and her family are receiving.
Bec acknowledges she hasn’t always been perfect on TV and understands not everyone likes her. However, she feels some of the criticism she’s received has gone too far.
‘I’m probably the most hated woman in Australia at this point in time,’ she told me.
Let me tell you, it wasn’t offered as a kind gesture, not at all. It felt more like someone who’s incredibly self-aware, someone who’s been anticipating how others see them and mentally preparing for the fallout for weeks. They weren’t looking for pity, just acknowledging the situation with a kind of exhausted understanding.
‘You either love me or you hate me, and that’s just it. I know who I am at my core.’
But beneath the defiance was something else – genuine hurt.
For Bec, the worst part of the public criticism hasn’t been the comments about her actions or expressions at dinner parties. It’s been the constant implication that she has a problem with alcohol.
As a lifestyle expert, I often see situations that deeply affect people, and this one is particularly painful. It’s not just a general offense; it cuts right to the core because it’s incredibly personal. It feels like a direct attack on who she is, and that’s what makes it so heartbreaking.
She shared that she previously dated someone who struggled with alcohol addiction. This was not about her co-star, Danny Hewitt.
‘It’s an incredibly tough disease for someone to have.’
That is why, she says, the current wave of online speculation has been so upsetting.
She’s not saying people aren’t allowed to have their own thoughts, but she feels a significant term is being used carelessly, without a real grasp of what it implies.
‘I’m struggling with these accusations of alcoholism,’ she said.
‘I’m not abusing alcohol at all and I never was.’
Okay, let’s address this. Yes, I’ve seen the chatter, and I’ll be honest – Bec admits there were moments during filming where she appeared less than her best. She’s actually really open about it! But the story some people are spreading online? It’s way off base from what actually happened. She’s setting the record straight, and it’s important to hear it directly from her.
Bec noticed that losing a lot of weight, both before and during the experiment, altered how her body reacted to alcohol.
She shared that she’d already lost 44 pounds before filming started, and lost even more during the demanding production. The long hours, limited food, and pressure to fit into form-fitting outfits all contributed to the weight loss.
I used to be able to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine without feeling any effects, but recently I’ve noticed even two or three drinks now leave me feeling quite tipsy. It’s a change I’ve definitely noticed – I’m not handling alcohol like I used to.
She was surprised by how her body changed, explaining that after losing 30 kilograms, her ability to handle things was completely different.
To be clear, Bec isn’t responding to the ‘alcoholic’ slur by claiming she is a teetotaller.
She explains that the way she appeared on screen was due to her body’s response to losing weight and being under stress.
Considering the constant online scrutiny, where even small mistakes are captured and analyzed, it’s simple for people to misinterpret her actions and create a false narrative.
She strongly denied rumors claiming she used drugs during the Dinner Parties.
‘I’m not on drugs. We got drug tested every week,’ she clarified.
The claim that she’s featured on every invitation or discussed at every dinner party simply isn’t accurate.
It’s frustrating that this even needs to be said, but that’s just how things have unfolded on this season of Married at First Sight.
The conversation has evolved past typical discussions about warning signs, manipulative behavior, or cheating – things that often happen on early dates.
The situation has become quite harsh for some performers, with people online – on platforms like Reddit and TikTok – openly accusing them of being untrustworthy or deliberately sabotaging the show, and these accusations are being made casually.
Bec says the messages she is receiving daily are relentless.
She explained that she receives daily messages telling her she’s unattractive and suggesting self-harm because of her perceived insecurities.
It’s gone beyond simply watching and commenting on TV. Now, people are actually encouraging a young woman to end her life because of a reality show.
And it is not just her copping it.
Bec says the situation has also affected her family, who have been receiving hateful messages as more people talk about her publicly.
That, perhaps more than anything, explains why she felt compelled to speak out now.
She’s aware of how she’s coming across on the show and understands some of her choices haven’t been well-received. Importantly, she takes responsibility for her actions and doesn’t try to shift the blame onto the editing process. However, she also acknowledges that everyone makes mistakes.
‘What comes out of my mouth is what comes out of my mouth,’ she said.
This is important because it shows she takes responsibility for her actions. However, people need to remember they’re only seeing a small part of the whole story.
‘People see tiny little snippets. They don’t know everything about me.’
The real Bec, as she portrays herself, is much more complex than the dramatic persona seen by viewers of Married at First Sight.
She volunteers at the RSPCA every two weeks and often takes in animals to care for them temporarily. She wants people to know she’s not the cruel and spiteful person some have portrayed her as.
‘I hope one day people get to see the true and authentic me,’ she said.
It’s still uncertain if audiences will continue to be understanding, but it’s obvious the show is having a significant impact on the participants’ well-being, both physically and emotionally.
‘I feel like I’m in a constant state of panic,’ she admitted.
‘Eating has been difficult because I’m extremely stressed.’
Elsewhere in our interview, she described her current headspace as ‘a roller-coaster’.
This is the part of reality TV you almost never see in advertisements or previews.
The people on these shows are hoping to find love, get famous, and gain attention. They’re also often looking for perks like Instagram verification and sponsorship opportunities if the show boosts their profile.
People often don’t realize how powerful and overwhelming public condemnation can be until they themselves become the target. Once the public decides someone deserves punishment, the backlash can be intense.
Bec knows she is divisive. ‘I’m like Vegemite,’ she said.
‘You’re either going to love me or you’re going to hate me.’
Over the past few months, I’ve gotten to know Bec, and she’s refreshingly authentic. She doesn’t try to be perfect or follow media scripts. She’s direct, sometimes a little rough around the edges, and isn’t afraid to speak her mind, even if it means making a mistake.
She’s also self-aware enough to recognize her own imperfections, and she’s honest about when criticism becomes overwhelming and hurtful.
‘I’m not perfect. I’m just a human being trying to better myself every day.’
Reality TV does well when there’s drama – it relies on creating clear good guys, bad guys, and people who fall apart on camera to keep viewers watching. However, there’s a line between simply criticizing someone’s actions on the show and actively trying to ruin their life because of it.
Bec isn’t asking people to necessarily like her. She simply wants viewers to be mindful of the impact their words can have.
With this season already filled with drama, deception, and harsh criticism online, that message from a cast member could be the most important one we’ve heard yet.
