Air Bud's Kevin DiCicco says he's homeless and dealing with major health problems

As a lifestyle expert with a heart for human stories, I am deeply moved by the tale of Kevin DiCicco, the man behind Disney’s beloved Air Bud franchise. His journey, marked by creativity, resilience, and unfortunate circumstances, is a poignant reminder of the complexities that life often presents.

The individual instrumental in shaping Disney’s Air Bud series is currently grappling with health problems and homelessness as the holiday season approaches.

Kevin DiCicco informed TMZ that he’s close to finding himself homeless, as he has almost reached the 90-day limit for staying at a shelter in San Diego.

DiCicco expressed his deep concern to the news outlet about potentially being homeless, a fear that is intensified due to his ongoing struggle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which adds to his health crisis.

In simpler terms, DiCicco, the owner and trainer of the beloved Golden Retriever character Buddy featured in the 1997 Disney movie, mentioned that he didn’t receive a lot of financial reward for his work on the film series.

In August of 1997, the first Air Bud movie was released in cinemas and earned a box office total of approximately $23.1 million, as reported by Box Office Mojo.

Despite Buddy passing away from synovial cell sarcoma in 1998, the Air Bud franchise continued to provide Disney with a steady stream of content until 2012. During this period, DiCicco garnered 11 credits for his creative input.

According to DiCicco, after facing bankruptcy, he experienced depression which he managed with medical marijuana – he clarified that he never resorted to using any other types of substances.

He attributed his battle with COPD – which the Mayo Clinic defines as ‘an ongoing lung condition caused by damage to the lungs’ – to his marijuana use.

According to DiCicco, he requires additional oxygen flow which can be provided by an oxygen concentrator, and he has been utilizing an electrical power source within the shelter to recharge his medical device.

According to DiCicco, although professional assistance helped pull him out of depression, he encountered another obstacle when the coronavirus pandemic broke out.

According to DiCicco, he had to leave his role as a property manager because of financial issues caused by the closure that was triggered by the spread of the virus.

A GoFundMe campaign initiated by DiCicco’s friends aims to collect $200,000 for his recovery. As of Sunday evening, it has garnered $10,659 from 235 donors.

DiCicco admitted to TMZ that he felt reluctant about asking for public help through a fundraising campaign, but due to his precarious living conditions, he finds himself with few remaining alternatives.

In simpler terms, DiCicco expressed gratitude that strangers are donating to his cause, saying, “I am deeply touched that people I’ve never encountered are contributing to my mission.” Once more, thank you so much for your kindness. Your generosity means a lot to me.

In an interview with Fox 5 San Diego in July, DiCicco explained that the way the finances were structured for the Air Bud franchise ensured that the movies would never truly earn substantial sums of money.

Instead of looking forward to our golden years and preparing for retirement, we find ourselves needing to rebuild or begin anew.
