AI Showdown: Sentient’s Open Deep Search vs. Perplexity – Who Will Win?

So, here we are, folks. Sentient, the brainchild of Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, has decided to throw its hat into the ring with something called Open Deep Search. Apparently, it’s an open-source AI framework that’s supposed to be better than Perplexity. I mean, who knew we needed a better Perplexity? It’s like saying, “Hey, I’ve got a new way to make toast!” 🍞

They launched this thing on April 2nd. No, it’s not an April Fool’s joke—at least, I hope not. They claim it’s the first open-source AI search system to actually outshine Perplexity and its fancy sidekick, Perplexity Sonar Reasoning Pro. I can just hear the developers at Perplexity now, “Oh great, now we have to deal with this!” 🙄

They introduced this tech to a crowd of 1,500 crypto and AI developers at the Open AGI Summit during ETH Denver. You know, the usual suspects. Sentient’s platform is all about multi-step reasoning and factual query responses. Sounds impressive, right? But let’s be real, how many of us actually need multi-step reasoning to find out where to get the best bagel in town? 🥯

Now, let’s talk about the brains behind this operation. Sentient Labs was founded by Sandeep Nailwal, a former Polygon co-founder. They raised a whopping $85 million in seed funding. That’s right, $85 million! Meanwhile, I can’t even get a decent cup of coffee without breaking the bank. ☕

“The release of Open Deep Search is a milestone in our mission to make AI accessible to everyone,” said Himanshu Tyagi, co-founder of Sentient. “Open-sourcing a framework that outperforms industry leaders like Perplexity throws down the gauntlet to closed-source AI developers while giving developers access to a powerful primitive that frees them to create the applications they’ve always dreamed of.”

Scaling access through Sentient Chat

So, they’re integrating Open Deep Search into Sentient Chat, their consumer-facing AI chatbot. Because, you know, we all need another chatbot in our lives. The rollout will start with early testers, followed by weekly updates. I can’t wait to see how that goes. “Oh, look! Another feature I didn’t ask for!” 😒

Despite being a small fish in a big pond, Sentient claims they developed ODS on a lean budget. They’re trying to level the playing field against those big, bad centralized AI models with their billions in funding. Good luck with that! It’s like bringing a spoon to a knife fight. 🍴

“ODS proves that open-source AI can compete with closed-source technology for reasoning architecture and search level,” the company stated in its release.
