Agents of SHIELD Quietly Erased 2 Characters From the MCU 10 Years Ago

A particularly impactful episode of Agents of SHIELD featured the deaths of two beloved characters ten years ago. While no longer officially part of the main Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline (Earth-616), Agents of SHIELD was once connected to the MCU. Because of this connection, the loss of these two powerful heroes resonated throughout the entire franchise.

The show Agents of SHIELD centered on Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), who came back to life and assembled a diverse team of SHIELD agents to explore unusual events happening globally. The team included well-known characters like Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) and Alphonso Mackenzie (Henry Simmons). Notably, two beloved characters said goodbye to their close-knit team in Season 3, Episode 13, titled “Parting Shot.”

Agents of SHIELD’s “Parting Shot” Bid Farewell to Bobbi Morse & Lance Hunter

The episode “Parting Shot” first appeared on ABC on March 22, 2016, and marked ten years since several beloved characters left the show. It’s remembered as one of the most emotionally impactful episodes produced by Marvel Television.

Lance Hunter was introduced in the second season premiere of Agents of SHIELD as someone working with the newly reformed SHIELD organization. Bobbi Morse first appeared a few episodes later, in “A Hen in the Wolf House,” posing as a HYDRA agent. Throughout the season, the show delved into Bobbi and Hunter’s past relationship as a married couple. They also worked to understand the rise of Inhumans, fought for control of SHIELD, and consistently battled against HYDRA.

The thirteenth episode of Agents of SHIELD Season 3, “Parting Shot,” concluded the team’s active service. They were released from a Russian interrogation facility with the condition that they could no longer work for the U.S. government, effectively safeguarding SHIELD, their loved ones, and global security.

Though they couldn’t reach the SHIELD team directly after being extracted, Bobbi and Hunter had a chance to say goodbye at a bar. They found their team members already there, and they shared a quiet, emotional last drink together.

Bobbi and Hunter weren’t meant to leave the show. Plans existed for them to star in their own series, but it never happened, leaving the possibility of their return open.

“Parting Shot” May Not Actually Be the End for Bobbi & Hunter

Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood were going to return as their characters in a new show. The series would have also featured Delroy Lindo, McKenna Grace, Fernanda Andrade, and Oded Fehr, and it would have centered on Bobbi and Hunter as they went on the run while investigating a conspiracy targeting them.

The episode “Parting Shot” cleverly left the characters without help from SHIELD, pushing them to seek assistance elsewhere. Although the planned spin-off, Marvel’s Most Wanted, didn’t happen, the character Blood reappeared in Episode 5 of the series, titled “Rewind.”

Hunter assisted Leo Fitz in locating Enoch, infiltrating a military base, and recovering the Zephyr One. This allowed Fitz to enter a long, restorative sleep and awaken decades later to aid his team. This demonstrated that Hunter remained an active operative even after departing SHIELD, hinting at a possible future return for both him and Bobbi Morse within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ever since Agents of SHIELD ended six years ago, fans have wondered if any of its characters might show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, either as the original characters or alternate versions from different realities. Bringing Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter into the main MCU films and shows after ten years would be a fantastic addition.

This is particularly relevant today, as Marvel has been highlighting more down-to-earth, character-focused stories. These two characters are fan favorites, and it would be fantastic to see them team up again.

Agents of SHIELD Still Hasn’t Been Given the Defenders Treatment

Starting in early 2024, characters from the Netflix Marvel series—including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher—officially became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This move has allowed the original actors, like Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, and others, to return to their roles.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really excited about the possibility of seeing Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, and Finn Jones back! It sounds like the Multiverse Saga might finally allow characters from Agents of SHIELD to join the main MCU timeline. Now, Agents of SHIELD always had its own thing going on, a slightly different history than what we’ve seen in the core MCU movies (Earth 616, they call it), so it wasn’t officially part of the story before. But with the multiverse, anything is possible, and I’m hoping we get to see some familiar faces pop up!

Fans are hoping to see familiar faces like Phil Coulson and Daisy Johnson reappear, but bringing back Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter would be especially great. Although it might seem unexpected, their return would actually fit well with the story.
