The movie Apex has quickly become a popular success on the streaming platform, unexpectedly landing in the top ten. It’s a thrilling survival-horror film with strong performances from Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton, offering a fresh take on a well-known genre.
In the film Apex, Charlize Theron stars as Sasha, who flees to the Australian outback after a devastating event, only to become the target of a man named Ben (Taron Egerton). The movie shares similarities with another survival thriller, Dangerous Animals, currently on Shudder. That film features a character haunted by a childhood shark attack who turns the tables on his attacker (Jai Courtney), using sharks as weapons. Together, Apex and Dangerous Animals make a compelling double feature for fans of the genre.
Apex is a Survival Story Enhanced by Dangerous Animals
Like stories such as The Most Dangerous Game, Apex uses a stunning natural setting to highlight how harsh environments can negatively impact people. Watching Sasha cope with her experiences is compelling, but the suspense really comes from the unsettling behavior of the person hunting her, Ben.
Taron Egerton gives his most unusual performance to date, a significant departure from his roles in the Kingsman films. He plays Ben as a man obsessed with continuing an old hunting tradition, but his motivations are deeply disturbed. Initially appearing charming and eccentric, Ben slowly reveals himself to be a cold, manipulative, and ultimately unsettling character, drawing the audience in with a deceptive facade.
This transformation – the character realizing he’s lost his humanity and is now solely motivated by his convictions and past pain – perfectly complements the Netflix film. Similar to Jai Courtney’s character, Tucker, in Dangerous Animals, who initially appears friendly before revealing himself as a murderer who films his victims’ deaths, the character undergoes a stark change. Like Tucker, he quickly drops the pretense of normalcy and embraces his role as a ruthless killer. Both characters are driven by strange, misguided beliefs, demonstrating that a pleasant personality isn’t enough to guarantee someone is trustworthy.
Dangerous Animals Blends Two Genres to Make Something Unique
Apex is a tense and direct survival thriller that keeps the story moving and avoids becoming overly stylized. The film features high stakes, realistic violence, and a truly scary villain. It also cleverly builds the groundwork for ‘Dangerous Animals,’ successfully combining the slasher and survival genres to deliver an ambitious and original experience for viewers.
The film Dangerous Animals functions as a slasher movie, but Tucker isn’t a typical killer. He usually only kills when he absolutely has to, for survival. His real pattern of killing involves elaborate rituals: he disposes of victims by feeding them to sharks, and keeps a lock of their hair as a memento, adding it to a video recording. This detail elevates him beyond a simple masked killer and establishes him as a more complex, genuine serial killer in the slasher tradition.
However, Dangerous Animals is another strong entry in the creature feature genre with a meaningful message. Similar to Jaws, it features frightening attacks by sharks, but it presents them not as inherently vicious, but as generally gentle animals. The film attributes any aggressive behavior entirely to human actions.
The film does a fantastic job of portraying sharks accurately, while also delivering thrilling and memorable action sequences. This creates a unique contrast with other animal-attack movies – Dangerous Animals is a truly one-of-a-kind experience that won’t be replicated.
Dangerous Animals is the Second Part in a Twisted Double Feature
Apex handles its serious storyline with genuine feeling. What makes it work is that the villain’s odd behavior isn’t constant – it only appears when it highlights his intelligence and how he cleverly hides it. This allows Taron Egerton to deliver a standout performance, expertly portraying a wide range of emotions and leading the audience to believe his character is even more unpredictable than he actually is.
The serious tone of Apex perfectly prepares audiences for the contrasting energy of Dangerous Animals. Apex establishes weighty themes, which then allows Dangerous Animals to deliver a complete shift in style. While the killer in Dangerous Animals is both clever and outlandish, the absurdity of their methods is unsettling yet strangely humorous. This intentional contrast is key to enjoying the film; embracing the silliness unlocks its unique charm.
The two films are actually quite similar on the surface. Both feature equally disturbed killers with beliefs and methods that are completely detached from reality, leaving the characters feeling hopeless. However, it’s the central conflicts and underlying messages that ultimately set them apart.
Both Apex and Dangerous Animals work well together because they offer a change of pace – a lighthearted thrill after a more intense movie. They’re both scary, entertaining, and feature memorable action, fitting nicely into the horror/thriller genre. However, they each offer something unique, potentially attracting new fans and providing a fresh experience that isn’t common in these types of films, making them a great double feature.
